What's the purpose of the power clean? To generate power correct? The purpose of the deadlift or squat exercises is to develop strength. Power is generated at lighter loads, not heavier loads. I am not a big believer in working over 70% on OL's. I am not an olympic lifter and the kids I train are not Olympic Lifters at least competitively speaking so I don't concentrate on the amount of mass they can lift with those movements. I concentrate on how technically proficient they are with a ligther load at faster speeds which generates more power. I think the use of the OL's to develop max strength is flawed. Optimally maximum power capabilities with exercises that have no deceleration through the full range of motion, thus a medball snatch toss should elicit higher power numbers than even a 30% loaded snatch. I believe that power can be optimized by facilitating neuromuscular recruitment with heavier lifts such as the squat or deadlift and then complexed with light to medium load snatches, cleans, plyos, and med ball tosses.
