It is tough call to make about how to effectively train someone like Galen. Al Sal has a very effective approach in that he works a variety of complexes that build a complete and balanced engine. This begs the question: Does Galen need a squat max of 300lbs to be a more effective distance runner? Perhaps, perhaps not. The beauty of Galen and Mo is that they have been largely injury-free and making steady gains for years. If you look at most of Al Sal’s workouts, he leaves gas in the tank. This is just another piece of the puzzle.
Strength training comes in a variety of forms. Many get caught up in the numbers of squat, bench, clean, etc but forget to look at the entire body and how it is going to function in the long run. I like this balanced approach and who really knows where it falls in the overall plan of Galen’s training. 90+ mileage weeks make for interesting and careful training schemes.
