How much do you think extra strength gains would help? I’m new to track but you seem far stronger than alot of decathletes i would think?
Maybe HS or Master’s age decathletes. And probably a bit stronger than most people at my point level (6-6.5k).
But in general, for my size (90-92k) I’d say I’m on the far left side of the bell curve relative to my body weight. Competitive Deca guys my size – 1.88m and 90K+ would be: (Going metric for the hell of it 🙂 )
Clean – 145k (to my 120k)
Squat – 190k (to my 150k)
Bench – 145k (to my 120k)
Now – I’m only just back (1.5 years) to any sort of regular or serious weight lifting, and suspect I’d be a lot stronger if I didn’t have 7+ years missing in my training history. But, I’d say that strength is quite possibly a major limiting factor for me in many events.
While speed is definitely a weak point for me (and with a lifetime PB of only 11.34 has always been) I think I can pick up more points more quickly with boosting my strength to “strong enough” – and I feel like my ability to run 200/400+ is not what it needs to be and figure that with the right work, I could pick up 150 points in the 1500 and 100 points in the 400 very quickly without significantly sacrificing speed as I’m ending this season.
