We did a 40 meter timing recently to see "where we all are – at this point" (but to us ~ who's the fastest), on my college track team.

          My question.

          Starting from a 3 point  in running-shoes,

around what time would a professional sprinter run over 40 Meters? remember the circumstances please –

Have any of you done similar off-season timing?

that was 40 yards, which is about 35 meters.

          and it was in spikes,

but what would he run 40 Meters in teni-shoes?

          whats your estimate cocky?

Mike can tell you… As far as I know, they test 30m at LSU. One athlete ran a 3.76, which is better than Donovan Bailey's 3.78.

          Respectfully,

When training at LSU Bailey ran 3.78 for 30m; 2 years ago Kelly Willie ran 3.76. That year we also timed a flying 10m (10m tacked on to the end of the 30m test) and that's where the times I mentioned above came from.

          Mike,
You stopped mid-sentence in mentioning the forty times.

          Check it out above.

"Kelly Willie and John Moffitt ran…"

          Respectfully,
          –Smoot

I think the biggest factor with all these numbers being thrown around is how the test is administered…..Each comes about from different ways of…..

I can think quickly of the following differences I often hear amongst numbers, which makes it impossible to compare and should be taken into account with this discussion.

          1) Hand versus FAT
          2) Touch pad versus gun (which will make BJ's different than Donovan's)
          3) Movement versus those on #2
          4) Blocks versus no blocks
          5) Competition versus testing (one is head to head, one is not and will also make BJ's different than Donovan's)
          6) and of course the biggest test, because of one individual included in this discussion, the post effort pee in a cup test

what would bailey or kelly willie be clocked @40 meters though?

          any kind of estimate

also, did the two run in spikes or shoes?/on a track or on turf?

          thanks,
          cody

Sorry about leaving you guys hanging above. Here are some 40m times from last year. They might be slightly slower than the athletes potential because the athletes are actually scored for 30m and we tell them to run 40m so we can get a 10m fly time.
*Walter Davis (current TJ world champion): 4.8 (with a 3.76 30m)
          *Gerald Taylor (collegiate LJer): 4.76 (with a 3.72 30m)
*John Moffit and Kelly Willie both ran at or below 4.8 (I don't have their times right in front of me).
*Bailey ran 3.75 the year he ran 9.91

I wanted to add that all those times were run right before halloween with the athlete in spikes, running by themselves, with blocks, and using a touch pad and a timing gate.
