Best Colleges for Sprinters

          I was thinking about what the best colleges would be for a sprinter to go to in order to achieve the greatest increases in their performances. So I did a little research and here's what I came up with:

          University of Houston – With a coach of World Record status it would be tough to say no if recruited by this school, not only that Leroy Burrell has the stats to impress. He has done some impressive things with mediocre talent. Stanford Routt went from 21.05 last year to third place at outdoor NCAA's and a new PB of 20.51 this year, Robert Foster went from 10.67 in 2000 to 10.32 in 01 to 10.18w this yr, Fred Day 10.66 hs to 10.47 in 01 and 10.34 in 02 and 03(w) and a 39.28 relay.

          Texas Christian University – Coach Monte Stratton, the list speaks for itself! Raymond Stewart, Percival Spencer, Kim Collins, Jon Drummond, Michael Frater, Lindel Frater, Donovan Powell, Roscoe Tatum, Darvis Patton, Tony Allen, Bryan Howard(all have run very low 10's/20's and some sub-10) and collegiate record 38.04 Bryan Howard, Jarmiene Holloway, Syan Williams, Percy Spencer.           University of Arkansas – Coach Lance Brauman in his 1st year, from Barton County Comm Coll where he accumulated an incredible list of accollades and developed talents such as Bernard Williams. ALL SPRINTERS/HURDLERS WHO RAN THROUGHOUT THIS PAST YEAR SET PB'S(MANY IN MULTIPLE EVENTS!)!!!

          These are the 3 schools that I think are the best for a sprinter to go to to improve upon PB's. Please feel free to add schools that u think should be on this list, but make sure you back it up with stats and feel free to diagree with my choices. 🙂

          tenesee!! look at sean lambert 10.60 in high school improved to a 10.13 and look at justin gatlin among many others!

          A number of the people you've attributed to Stratton actually ran with current Texas coach Bubba Thornton. Jon Drummond, Donovan Powell and Raymond Stewart all trained with Bubba.

          I would say Tennessee would be a great choice.
          Other choices:
          Mouse at Florida
          Amy Dean for women at Miami
          Spry at Auburn has had some good people
          I hear the guy from Portland State has some potential 😉

          I didn't put Tennesee on there b/c of the past couple seasons. This past year was absolutely awful for the sprint crew and the year before that was pretty bad too(the only sprinter who improved was Justin Gatlin and while Lambert had an excellent freshman year, he hasn't run sub 10.3 legally since). I have come to believe that, while they do have good coaches, they have been blessed with tremendous talent that would've succeeded under most any system(Gatlin and Scott). BTW, does anyone know what happened to Scott? Is he still pursuing football?

          There's a school that I can't seem to remember the name of, but if I recall correctly, over the past 15+ years it has consistently produced national and international class sprinters and sprint relay times and in 2003 won 3 of the 4 sprint relays at the outdoor NCAAs and also set a world leading, collegiate record time in the women's 4 x 200m. Can anyone remember the name of this school? 😉

          Yes, I was referring to the men's sprints, but post schools for women at will! Texas and USC?? Seriously? Inconsistent performances and rarely does someone set a PB.

          i will add to the mutual respect club we have going here. Georgia Southern's recent test results indicate that the coach there can flat out get it done.

          GaSouthern coach test results don't mean much until it is done on track. Coach there always screws it up always has, always will.

          JU- last year- 3rd in 60m, 11.17 100.

          I'll also add men's sprint school-
          University of Minnesota for 400 and 400 hurdles. I'll go as far to say, possibly better than Baylor. Those coming in come in with much less of a stellar resume than Baylor incomers. Plus, UM, it ain't exactly ideal track weather outside for much of the year.

          phoenix. she was fast and untrained when she arrived. 7.31 in HS 7.24 as a senior here. 11.99 to 11.41 leagal but banged up the rest of the year (11.13 was +3.1 at Texas Relays)she ran fast, but never liked track, and now, just when she has learned some things, she is retired. but as sweet a gal as you will find, and making good money in the business world.

          Lincoln college in Pennsylvania seems to be a good place

          {The Lincoln University men's and women's track teams have been among the premier Division III programs in the country since 1985, claiming 15 national championships under head coach Cyrus Jones. }

          With success only matched by the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, the Lincoln men have won six outdoor national championships (1985, 1990, 1995, 1996, 1999 and 2000) and five indoor national titles (1990, 1995, 1996, 1999 and 2000). The Lincoln women have won three outdoor national crowns (1993, 1999 and 2000) and one indoor national title (1993).

          Lincoln's six national outdoor titles ranks the Lions second behind UW-LaCrosse, who have won eight outdoor titles. In addition to the championships, the Lincoln men have also finished as national runner-ups 11 times (1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1997, 1998, 2001, and 2003).

          In addition to all of the team success, Lincoln University has produced over 300 All-American athletes.

          DID YOU KNOW???

          Lincoln men have won 49 individual championships, which is the most in Division III history.
          Lincoln holds six NCAA Division III outdoor championship meet records.
          The Lincoln men's 4 x 400-meter relay team have won 10 races during the NCAA Division III outdoor championship meet, the most by any school.
          The nine individual NCAA Division III championships by Rhondale Jones is an NCAA record for all divisions, covering both indoor and outdoor track and field. Jones three-peated by winning the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and 100-meter hurdles in 1999, 2000 and 2001 at the outdoor meet.
          Alondra Woodard was the first female to participate in the indoor championships for Lincoln University and she was the first female All-American in school history.
          Coach Cyrus Jones has been named National Coach of the Year five times. He also served as honorary official during the 2002 Penn Relays and was recently selected as one of the top 100 sports figures in the Philadelphia region of the past 100 years by the Philadelphia Tribune.
          Clive Terrelonge participated in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona and the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta running for his home country of Jamaica. Terrelonge also won the 1995 World Championship in the 800-meter run.

          University of Wisconsin-La Crosse

          Mark Guthrie (Wartburg, 1975) is in his 17th season as head coach of the men's track and field team at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. He has guided the Eagles to 17 NCAA III championships and 28 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles in his career.

          Under Guthrie's direction, UW-L swept the indoor and outdoor national titles in 1988, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1997, 2001, 2002 and again in 2003. The Eagles captured their ninth indoor and eighth outdoor championship under Guthrie in 2003.

          The continued pressures of maintaining a national championship-caliber program may weigh heavily on some coaches, but Guthrie is enjoying success too much to worry about a letdown. He feels no added pressure to win national championships year after year.

          "The expectation of a UW-L track team is to be in a position to challenge for the national championship on a yearly basis, while providing our student-athletes with the opportunity to grow in all aspects of their lives," Guthrie said.

          The coaching philosophy Guthrie uses to turn out one of the top NCAA III track programs in the country year after year is simple: "Provide the facilities and environment where the student-athlete can gain the maturity and confidence to enhance his talents and attain the goals that he sets for himself," he said.

          "When we can graduate and retain people who are good students and athletes, that's the package we want. We've been fortunate to win in the classroom and on the track."

          Guthrie was named the Mondo Division III National Coach of the Year by his peers in the United States Track Coaches Association in 1994, '97, '98, '99, 2001, 2002 and 2003. In addition, he was voted regional Coach of the Year by the organization in 1994, '95, '96,'97, '98, '99, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003. Guthrie has been named the WIAC Coach of the Year nine times, including the indoor and outdoor honoree in 2003.

          In 1997, he was selected first vice-president of the USTCA Division III and took over as president in December, 2000.

          Guthrie began his coaching career in 1975 at Fennimore High School as the boy's cross country and track head coach. His teams won three consecutive state cross country championships. In 1980, he became head coach of the boy's track, girl's track and girl's cross country programs at Naperville (Ill.) North H.S.
