    calf cramps after a work-out

          I attended a jump camp the other day and experienced calf cramps toward the end of the session. We did jump drills during the morning and afternoon including some short approach long and triple jumps. Now I am afraid I will experience some of these during a meet.

          What is the best way to avoid them in the first place, and “treat” them if they occur during a competition?

          In almost all cases, sodium depletion is the primary cause of cramping. Hydration is correlated with the problem because the more you sweat the more water and sodium you lose but it isn’t really the answer to the problem. Taking in water with sodium would be a much better solution [ha…..get it, salt + water = solution].

          As for your problem, I’d doubt you have anything to worry about. If your jumps camp is anything like most I’ve seen, there is tons of repetitive low-level drilling going on which will result in the problem I mentioned above (lots of sweating). This is rarely a problem in indoor track field events.
