earlier today i recorded myself triple jumping from a 4 right approach. i know my swing leg mechanics could be better ( keeping it lower to the ground, toe up). also my arms are not really involved like they could be. i usually go about 44' from 4 strides but i havent done it since the end of the season. i have a full approach of 46'. wut is wronge with my form? link below

im thinkin i might switch to the single arm swing on my first phase to conserve speed

Try and pause the video at the point of your step take off – I would say you are sinking to far to much. The entire time your foot is in contact with the ground you are losing speed and hence distance. It is impossible to take off until you have fully extended the leg so the more distance it has to go through the longer it will take.  Hope that makes sence!

Things to work on – core strength: You want your core to fire dynamically a millisecond before your foot makes contact with the ground to prevent as much sag – like you are coling a spring and you release it as your foot touches the surface.

Also look at your free leg – the drive starts a little to late once again it is impossible to take off before that free legs comes through.

          Hope that helps!

yes i kinda understand. but it kinda contradicts what someone else told me to keep my take-off leg on the ground a split second longer. i guess its just one of those things i will have to figure out on my own

That doesn't look bad at all!

As for the take off, I used to have a problem in the long jump with "tapping" the board at take off. My coach (Cliff Rovelto) and I talked about "moving over" the T.O. foot by staying in contact with the board and pushing all the way through. The main thing that you want to avoid at the T.O. is sticking the foot out in front of you and creating a "braking" action.

not to sound cocky, but im not new to triple jumping. i have spent a year jumping at a D1 school. im just trying to see what i can do to approve my technique. maybe all i need to do is get stronger and do a lot of bounding and speed work this summer. with my current form, i have scratched a couple of 48' jumps

Honestly, your tech. is not bad! Strength should be the focus of any summer program!!! That is the time when the biggest gains are made.

Start your summer lifting program with a 4 week hypertrophy cycle (3×10) M-W-F
Then go through a max. strength cycle for 3-4 weeks (5×5)

          why 3×10?

3×10 or 4×10. Just a base hypertrophy program. Foundation first!

another thing i notice in elite triple jumpers is how right before the landing of the hop and take-off for the step the leg is almost straight and way in front of them. does it look like i do this in my jump? i can tell from slowing it down that i do it a little bit but i can do it some more

If you are jumping 44' from 8 steps, and 46 from full approaches, you either need some serious speed work or serious speed conservation work when you're bounding.  Just my opinion, take it for what it's worth, which isn't much 🙂

im not slow, so im thinkin i dont need much speed work. i might just b slow running down the runway. i guess i have to make my approach run more natural

The leg is firing under and pushing through the takeoff. If the leg is "way in front" AT ground contact then a "braking" action will occur and speed and power will be lost. Your tech. is fine. I'd probably work on takeoff speed at the board.

i understand that, their foot is out in front, but not at ground contact. this is where the pawing action comes into play, the foot goes from out in front to a little bit infront of the hips

I remember you writing back and forth with me last year before you went off to school.  How did your first year go?

From your video all I can really say is you need to be stronger, just what the others have said.  It looks like you go just a wee bit flat off the hop, and that will come around with more strength and bounding expertise.

I get all my jumpers to study video of Jonathon Edwards big jumps and get that engrained in their heads.  Man, if everyone could keep the speed he did.  There are devilish rumours in the coaching world that he actually got faster as he went through the phases.  Now we all know that's not true…or is it?

One other recomendation.  Some people teach their jumpers that the triple jump begins at the end of the hop.  Keep that thought.  I visited Yannick Tregaro in Sweden last year, he is the coach of Kajsa Berqvist and Christian Olssen.  He gave me that cue, and it really does make sense.

          Cheers,

          The Fern

i did ok i guess. i came into last season with a pr of 44'1 and ended with a 46' pr. i had trouble hitting the board so i was always a couple inches before. around the end of the season, i was finally on the board but i went over on a 47' jump. me and my coach figured out that it was about 2 rights away from take off my hips would drop and i would chop. i finally learned how to open up at this point, but by this time, conference was right around the corner so my coach didnt take me (his loss) for most of the season i was ranked 13-15 out of 25 jumpers
