It is always interesting at this time of the year at the start of spring training and with the NFL combine to read the stories of how people have changed their technique. I have been following the Tim Tebow story with great interest. Apparently he has a team of “experts’ who have completely revamped his throwing style. He is not going to unveil his new technique at the NFL CONbine, but will wa
Changing Technique – Quick Fixes

I’m quite certain that Urban and more specifically Dan Mullen (Tebow’s QB coach his first 3 years) didn’t change his throwing technique due to the fact that it would take him a loooong time to do so and college coaches have limited time to coach them by rule. Plus Tebow could clearly win games and his technique and play was better under Mullen his first three years. I know Dan Mullen, curious to know his thoughts on the technique issue.
-
Who cares, this guy is not a QB! There are middle/high school kids who throw the ball better then Tebow. If this was a black qb they wouldn’t even be giving him a chance to play qb.
This was hot story weeks ago from my dad’s friend son, who plays for Jax.
[Offensive lineman Uche] Nwaneri posted on the Jaguars’ Web site that, while cashing a check, a bank teller started talking about how Tebow will save the Jaguars.
So Nwaneri posted his five points on Tebow, with capital letters:
“1. He can’t throw, PERIOD.
2. He can’t read any coverage other than probably cover 2 or man.
3. The QB Wildcat WILL NOT WORK IN THIS LEAGUE. PERIOD.
4. He doesn’t know how to take a snap from center.
5. HE CAN’T THROW, and that’s really something you either have or not.”
-
I don’t want to get deep into the race issue, but what about Tavaris Jackson? He can’t do much of anything that well and he is getting a shot?
I think the fact of the matter with Tebow is that he is a great leader and has led his team to wins at an alarming rate. You can use the “he won because he had super talent around him” argument, but look back at history…when hasn’t that been the case. If I was on a good team and didn’t have huge holes to fill, I would draft him, work on making some changes and let him lead my team after he’s had some years to learn and develop. I think his body of work at leasts earns him a chance.

WOW, I’m gonna steal NFL countdown quote “Come On Man”!! TJ is a much better qb then tebow will ever be. For example couple years ago Texas A&M had a stud qb Reggie McNeal, he couldn’t even get a shot, damn guy ran 4.4’s and had a arm. Tebow was a great college football player, key word is “COLLEGE”. Did you watch the senior bowl?
What about Leftwich, same type of slow delivery and a winner but can’t find a job? Shit Charlie Ward, Tommie Frazier, and Casey Printers could have been better pro qb’s.

the racial euphamisms and assigned roles used in d1 and pro football are heavily in favor of blacks and against whites. your opinion is nothing more than reinforced conditioning.
How are the roles in favor for black athletes? How many black owners are in the NFL? How many part black owners are in the NFL? How many black GM’s are in the NFL? How about saying black athletes can’t process things as quick as white athletes so they can’t be great qb’s. Great black qb’s are labeled as great athletes while guys like Manning and Brees are great qb’s.

If thats’s what you mean, then it’s wrong; just like it’s wrong that we don’t have more black qb’s, coaches, and gm’s. I don’t know many white wr’s that runs a legit 4.3 that is called a “possession receiver”.

the 13% black pop in america makes the dearth of black qbs, gm’s, and coaches very reasonable in comparison to the complete absense of white rbs.

Matt Jones 4.37
At one time he was considered a deep threat, can’t help lack of production.
There is no doubt that he makes for a big target who can run quick slant routes, but his 40 speed has not made him a consistent deep threat, which is something the Bengals are lacking.
ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports free agent WR Matt Jones has chosen to sign with the Bengals over the Titans. Contrary to popular belief, Jones hasn’t been a deep threat as his body has filled out.
-
hey you may be write concerning certain stereotypes of black qbs but to complain as if it anything close to the restrictions whites face in american sports is a crime.
Yes, it is a big difference. A personal attack is a lot different then saying someone has tight hips.

Ok…this is exactly what I didn’t want to happen, but it had to be mentioned at some point since UT through it out there. This is never going to end, so lets please drop it.
The bottom line with Tebow is, (white, black, green, or whatever) is he won more than anyone else. FACT. So based off of that he deserves at least a shot. That is what I said in the first place. To refute the Leftwich point…didn’t he get a shot? Tavaris got a shot, didn’t do anything and now the Vikings will wait on a senior citizen as a better option. Tavaris could be the best QB in the world, but he hasn’t shown anything, and Tebow at least deserves that.
Looking back, guys like Jeff Garcia, Kurt Warner, Doug Flutie and even Steve Young (at one point) had issues with something and couldn’t play in the NFL. They all ended up being pretty good. That is the only point I’m trying to make. UT, I’m sorry that I don’t view you or Mel Kiper (who said that JaMarcus Russel was going to be a super star, btw) as the know-all-end-all on NFL talent. He should at least get a shot.
Let’s stop with the black this vs. white that argument…it’s like pissing into the wind, it’s not going to accomplish anything.

Damn, why don’t white America like talking about the race issues we have in this country? Very touchy subject and it always touch that sensitive spot.
TJ hasn’t done anything, what about the late season run he had 2yrs ago? Who’s the better qb TJ or Tebow? TJ, Ray Charles can see that. BTW, thanks for making my point, TJ came from a small black school and wasn’t giving much time to adjust to the pro game etc and guys like you are ready to write him off. I hope Tebow does make it as a qb’s because he doesn’t have the athletic ability to play H-back or any other skill position. Leftwich was on a short lash because of the injuries, look at what he did in a good situation in Pitts.
Who said anything about Russell being a stud, I said he would be a bust, when I found out he wasn’t going to class in college etc. It’s qb’s like him that gives black qb’s a bad name!! Let’s talk about Warren Moon, McNabb, Randall, Doug Williams, and Steve McNair etc etc.
-
What the hell are you talking about. I have no problem talking about race issues…but did you read any of the convo above. You say one thing…some else says something, its all opinion and is adding nothing. Wait, I’m sorry, everyone else is an opinion, what you say is scripture.
Where are you going with Doug Williams, McNabb, McNair? They are great QB’s…I never have or never will debate that. Period. If we want to bring up other back QB’s, I think that Vince Young has the potential to be very good…and in a lot of ways is similar to Tebow. Weird throwing style, great athlete (like Tebow, who is white, before you accuse me of that), and was a great leader who deserved a shot and then another shot to lead his team.
I’m not saying that Tebow will be good or not…I’m saying he deserves a CHANCE. I don’t see how I made your point earlier. TJ came in the second half of last year and played great. Billy Volek did that a few years back, is he for real? Playing well for a 5-6 game span is great, but if he’s the truth then why don’t the Vikings trust him?
Lastly, re-read my post. I said Mel Kiper (who isn’t you…well maybe he is since you won’t come out from behind UT) said that. I’m done talking about this…I am wasting time, I think curling recap is on. You are the supreme authority on the subjuct, my opinion is wrong and look forward to the day when UTtrack.com is unveiled.

Tebow should be given a chance but no more then any other athlete, I’m sick of all the Tebow talk. BTW, Tebow is not a great athlete, if he was he could make the position change if need be.

Note the parenthesis, after Mel Kiper, not your name. (unless you are Mel Kiper.)
Now you’re trying to tell me what I said…holy crap dude. Thanks for the final clarification on Tebow. I look forward to hearing Adam Shefter and Chris Mortensen call you on draft day.

I hate Media and everyone saying Tebow is the next Ryan Leaf. Ryan Leaf did not plat for a football powerhouse (Washington State). He was ONLY a Finalist for the Heisman (Never actually won). Was a 1st round pick (2nd pick overall to be exact). Ryan Leaf left after his Junior year. NOTHING LIKE TEBOW. So let me set the record straight….
Tim Tebow is the next Chris Weinke.

02/24/2010 – 2010 NFL DRAFT SCOUT PRE-COMBINE TOP 64: 45. Tim Tebow ??? QB, Florida, 6-3, 236, 2: His production, charisma and toughness are well-known. But he showcased these abilities in a spread offense, which accentuated his positives and minimized his negatives. Tebow’s career productivity is off the charts: passing for 9,285 yards (88 touchdowns) and 16 interceptions; rushing for 3,390 yards and 57 TDs. But concerns over his ability to transfer his talent to the pro game were heightened in the Senior Bowl when he consistently had problems with the snap under center and his footwork. He also has an elongated throwing motion. – Frank Cooney, USA TODAY/NFL Draft Scout
Weaknesses: Absolutely horrendous footwork … Plays in a run-option offense and it will take him 2-3 years to learn an NFL offense … Horrible touch on the football, which is difficult to catch … Nice accuracy on the deep ball, but it’s very inconsistent in the intermediate routes … Extremely long release … Shown no improvement in his mechanics over his career … Locks on to primary receivers all the time … Speed at wide receiver made a lot of his throws look better than they actually were.
Summary: Tim Tebow lacks the basic precision passing qualities for what it takes to be an NFL quarterback, and as of now I’m giving him a fourth-round draft grade … Needs to improve mechanics drastically … Transition to being an NFL signal caller should take some time … Needs to be more of a calm/cool/collected leader on the field rather than being so emotional … Second halves against Michigan and LSU showed Tebow’s great flaws when they neutralized the run option and forced him to be a pocket quarterback … He could be a solid fullback in the NFL with his running style if it doesn’t work out at quarterback.
Player Comparison: Byron Leftwich. Both players have a similar release and solid mobility. Leftwich could never master the necessary timing and accuracy recquired in a West Coast offense. I fear the same for Tebow.

There you go bringing the race card into things. I honestly don’t give a damn what color Tim Tebow is. He could be green, thats not the damn point. My issue is with you being the most arrogant person here. I honestly have no stock in him and don’t follow a team, so I don’t care if he is an all pro or not. I just want him to get a chance to show if he can, before people that hide behind screen names write them off and call some BS race issue.
Did Tim Tebow slight you in some way? Did he run your ass over and not apologize for it or something?

They already had chances. Are you paying attention…or are you too damn busy staring in a mirror at yourself convince yourself that the NFL needs you, to comprehend what I’ve said.
At the risk of having this start all over again…
I honestly thought that Leftwich should have gotten more a chance in Tampa, but will agree with you that the reason he didn’t was because of his injuries.
Culpepper is an ok QB. I think that he benefited from having great weapons, but at the same time thats what happened with Cassel.
I understand that you are frustrated with how the NFL takes care of business, but we aren’t debating that and I don’t have any issues with black qbs…so can you please stop bringing that up with me.

I feel like we are losing sight of what the original topic was. Whatever opinion you have of Tim Tebow you can share but maybe if someone could just start up a new thread for that it would save alot of headaches. I have a comment on the original post. If technique can not be changed over the course of one day why then do coaches critique their sprinters/jumpers/throwers while doing block starts/practice jumps/throws the day of a meet? If your post is correct wouldn’t it be best to on the day of competition just to let your athlete do what they do?
-

Hey you are the one getting all hot over there, I’m just stating what 99.9% of most African American athletes feel.
-
Andrew,
You are right…and I apologize to everyone who has read this thread and for my off topic posts.
I think the reason that you see coaches trying to make last minute touch ups at meets, is not that they are trying to make wholesale changes in technique, but touching things up that you have been developing up to that point. For example, when looking at an approach run, if an athlete is pushing too much at the start of the run, it will wreak havoc on the front par of the run, and the coach is just trying to elicit the ideal movement / event plan that has been developed.
As an interesting aside, on one of the athletics Canada videos with Dan Pfaff, and he is cueing an athlete to make some changes to her long jump (forget if it was penulimate, takeoff, whole thing…) and through the practice she gets significantly better. He says to the camera at the end of the video, something to the effect of, they say you need 500 hours or so to learn a new skill, they just picked it up in 1.

I remember Tommie Frazier. If he had Tebow’s personality and hype from his school and played in an era with mind-blowing multimedia coverage he would have gotten the pub Tebow has. He WOULD have been drafted and they would have given him a shot at QB and then probably moved him to RB like they should probably move Tebow except for the fact people were scared of Frazier due to the blood clot. Charlie Ward chose basketball pure and simple.
The NFL is about money. Making money off of players. Those owners don’t give a damn whether someone is white or black or yellow or red. Sure, stereotypes continue to exist, both white and black biased, but they are rapidly being broken down. They gave an undersized Pat White a chance at QB he ran an almost identical offense to UF’s. He’s black. Vince Young had/has a fucked up delivery, he’s black, he made the Pro Bowl at QB. He lost his job because of an abysmal performance in ’08 versus Jacksonville that I witnessed in person. He should have lost it. He won it back by playing better than Collins.
I am sick of Tebow too, but he is a good guy and a good role model for kids. He’s getting his opportunity because he is who he is and he wins. I bet Eric Berry thinks Tebow is an athlete.
-
Did you even read that? If you did, it states why he was not drafted. Now, before you compare him again to Tebow, and then pull the race card, understand that a team drafting a guy with a serious condition that might DIE, is a little different than a guy that needs to change his mechanics.
Charlie Ward, if I’m not mistaken was up in the air on which sport to play in the pros (I think I remember hearing that he was drafted my the MLB as well) and that made teams apprehensive to draft him. I would be worried to place the franchise on a guy (read no color attached) that might leave in a year for another league.

I like you a lot UT but you are grabbing for straws and using examples that actually disprove your idea that black QB’s don’t get an opportunity to get an NFL job.
Leftwich was drafted SEVENTH OVERALL.
Duante was drafted ELEVENTH OVERALL.
You don’t get a better opportunity than that. As first rounders they were guaranteed to make the team and a shitload of money. What they do after that boils down to THEIR work ethic, skills, and the team they are on.
Tebow will not be drafted anywhere near 7th or 11th overall.
-
I am closing this thread. Start another thread if you want to discuss the race issue.

I highly doubt Tebow ever really gets a legitimate chance to be an NFL Starter/WB. However, the guy is a winner always has been and always will be. If he does, it will be a shame for other guys like Scott Frost, Randle-el, or Crouch who never got a legitimate chance to be NFL QB’s. I really believe the NFL groupthink will doom Tebow’s chances. He’ll be drafted in the 3rd round by Jacksonville or he will go in the 4th-6th rounds

Normally I would agree with you but much like how the pure hype that surrounded Sam McGuffie which subsequently led to him actually getting a d1 scholarship (although you can argue he was poorly used and was not given much of a chance at Michigan), Tim Tebow’s celebrity status will be his saving grace.

Well as far as I’m concerned about McGuffie he got a shot and will get probably 3 more eligible years of that shot tearing it up at Rice, but the argument can be made that he was poorly used for a number of reasons.
My main point was that Tebow’s celebrity status will prevent him from becoming the next Eric Crouch, or any other player that suffers the consequences of not fitting the typical NFL player mold.

I don’t think this is exactly true, most of the coaches who said they would love to have him are out of the game. I think he has earned a shot. Not to mention the coaching Ego’s in the NFL are out of control.
