Hey Brandon. Looking forward to watching your progression (I’m an old decathlete myself — d2 champ ’93).

But I’d love to see some other stats too, especially:
          30m fly
          30m crouch/block
          300 or 320 time trial
          VJ
          STJ or SLJ
          Shot throws (overhead, underhand)
Weight maxes (squat, deadlift, bench, cleans).

I have went through some of those tests. Here are some PBs.
          SLJ: 2.99m
          OHB (16lb shot): 13.36m
          Vert: 27 in
          30m crouch (hand timed): 3.85
          Clean: 235 lbs
          Bench: 215 lbs
          Squat below 90: 275
I never tested a 300 but we usually test a 600 and it was 1:27

Good luck, Brandon. Based on your PBs, you have a lot of dormant potential – esp in Discus, 400, 1500, and 110h.

I think 6600+ is very doable for you this year.

Thanks Matt. I defiantly agree. The 110H, 400, 1500, and disc PB’s were from my freshman year. I had my appendix removed last spring so I got a redshirt and couldn’t comp the outdoor season last year. I think I will see some big gains in those events this year especially since I put a lot of time and focus on them over the summer and just by having 2 years to physically mature since my freshman year.

I received some news today from the college today. There was illegal use of money for athletes fiancial aid. The school posted a band on all post season activity for a year. I think I am going to just compete unattached this year so I don’t burn a year of eligibility with no chance at NCAA’s.

That is unfortunate to hear about the university NCAA infractions. I, too, and a NCAA DIII Hept/Decathlete. I attend Alfred University up in NY. I kept a log here for a short period of time but fell off track over the course of the seasons.

Looking over your numbers I see that we are closely aligned in some events, but you have a great advantage in the events I seek to improve in (i.e. HJ, PV, and hurdles). It is very interesting to see your training techniques and perhaps we can share training/competition experiences and tips.

Best of luck competing Un-attached, it really is too bad about the ban.

Eric, Thank you and thanks for showing that the underdog can be successful.
Shane, It is a shame but on the positive note ill be a year older and a year more developed when I use that eligibility up. I would love to collaborate and bounce ideas off each other. I think that would be beneficial for the both of us.

          15 min run
GSC 45sec on 15 off going through 10 exercise
I’m about to split some wood for this winter. I don’t know if it is going to be beneficial for training but at-least it will help me relieve some frustrations.

That is definitely a great way to look at it. Do you plan on staying at Baldwin Wallace after this year? I know that eligibility can be a shady area when it comes down to it. Hopefully it won’t be a problem for you but I’ve heard that you have 5 years to complete your eligibility but must complete it at the school you started (don’t quote me but I think that is the case).

Shane, I am going to stay at Baldwin Wallace. I will save that ellgibility for that 5th year because I will be there anyways. I think you can transfer D3 to D3 but I think if you either go D3 to D1 or D1 to D3 you might have to sit out.

Definitely agree this is a lot of volume…and the intensity is on the low side imho. If you think you’re leaving a lot of points in the quarter, you might consider upping the intensity. Running 29′ 200 and 14′ 100 aren’t really going to making you run sub-50.

Just today, SpeedEndurance.com (https://speedendurance.com/2012/11/06/400-meter-training-workouts-annual-plan/) put up a bunch of links to 400m training plans. Check them out. I personally like the Tommy Smith (https://speedendurance.com/2007/06/20/bud-winter-sprint-program-for-tommie-smith/) approach and like the write up from Ken Jakalski (https://speedendurance.com/2007/07/04/400-meter-training-from-supertraining/).

          Good luck.

I’ll agree the volume is probably too high. I don’t know that the intensity is too low for early in the GPP phase. If you’re not feeling challenged or find yourself easily hitting the times you post and those were the goals, then modify it to something faster. A couple months from now when you move to SPP your runs should be MUCH more intense and you’ll have a better feel for what you should be running for times in any given workout.

Are you still at a point where you’re feeling yourself out to gauge your capabilities for both speed and speed endurance?

The pace looks more like Ext Tempo than Intensive.

Thus, that kind of volume is not a big deal.

I’d like to see 1 day a week at faster stuff – IE, what I’m doing today – 3×100, 3×120, 3×150 at 400m goal pace with walk back recovery. Gradually extending run distance to 300s+ by spring.

I was working with reglar distance and at 42 inches. I will try to film and upload my next hurdle practice and show you. One problem I have been having is hitting the hurdle with the lead leg hamstring on the way up. do you have any idea what could cause this?

Hamstring on the way up? I can’t really imagine that happening, over the top or on the way down maybe, but going up with your lead leg? I dunno I’d have to see a video just to understand what you mean lol

Means you’re running with low hips and sitting back into the hurdle. Work on tall hips and leading with knee.

I haven’t really posted in a while. I have been on winter break for school and had limited use of facilities. I used this time as a time to “play” with training. I would experiment with different kinds of training. There was no set plan for training. I would go do what I felt like I wanted to do and what my body wanted me to do. For instance on a day I was supposed to do some speed work I did tempo work instead because its what I thought was the most enjoyable at the time and it felt like its what my body wanted me to do. This was a very refreshing time for both my body and mind. I am going to start posting agian to get back into the grind. I will be competing in early Febuary in my next hep.
          Dynamic Warm Up
          Shot Put 40 throws
I have been experimenting with differnet throw variations. One example is I have been doing standing throws with my back foot on a 6 in box. This seems to help with weight transfer and using the lower body efficiently. Also I have been doing glide, glide, throw. This seems to help me move the shot through the circle better through the glide. I dont know the scientific data of all this but it just feels good and was a nice change of pace.
In place jump circut 30s to 15s work to rest ration with 8 different exersises.

That’s a solid HJ and HH early in the year. Nice work.

I gotta say, I see no reason you can’t get to a 7k+ number this season. Indoors appears a little stronger for you, but your HH indicate that you could/should be running the 100m quite a bit faster.
