Have you guys seen this clown running back from the Titans talking up how he could beat Usain Bolt in a 50 metre race?

It’s one thing running 2000 yards in a season in the NFL, but this guy didn’t have the ability to beat Walter Dix, now he is going to beat Usain Bolt, who runs a fantastic 50m split……….

i think i heard he runs a 4.4x forty. All the timing at the nfl combines are a joke as well. He would have no chance lol

Most the guy in the NFL saying that are dumb to track and field and have no clue what they are saying. No dount his friends hype him up and are telling him he’s the fastest man on the planet, so of course he’s dumb enough to actually come out in public and say it!

His gold teeth would probably weigh him down anyway>>>LOL
…….the idiot probably got timed over 50 yards and compared it to Usains 50 meter split time, didnt realise that there is about a 10% difference in distance, plonkers in the NFL also dont realise that hand timing is inaccurate,
also when they use electronic timing gates in NFL combine the timing seems to be just timing gates so lack of reaction time is in the favour of the runner, still he seems to be a damn good athlete, but man would I love to see any of those guys up against Usain, Asafa, Tyson, et al, I would say the closest they would get to a gold medal performace would be in Chris Johnson big mouth…

I think it would be a lot closer than many think. Consider that there have been numerous 10 flat 100m guys in the NFL and none of them have run as fast as Johnson did at the Combine. I think that if the race occurs on grass without blocks, it may be very close at 40 yards or so.

Usain has nothing to gain and everything to lose if he were to agree to such a race. Not to mention the repercussions for the perceived viability of track and field to the public if Johnson were to be close or even win.

I’d like to see the race.

          Bolt: 5.4 and pulling
          Johnson: 6.0 and fading

People think that a 4.3 40 (very fast) puts you in Elite territory, but the fact is, without RT, I bet Bolt would go under 4.0 in the 40. In fact, looking at the data from Berlin, it looks like if you pulled RT out of it, he was that fast.

I think most 4.3-4.4 guys would struggle to go much under 11.0.

          Hell – Josh and Evan’s 6.3 55’s are faater than Johnson’s (claimed) 40.

If you have ever watched any of the old NFL’s Fastest Man Competitions, you would see that the top 2 or 3 guys are running 6.09-6.15 55m. You must consider that there have been numerous sprinters (10.0-10.3) who barely break 4.4 at the NFL combine. I think that Jacoby Ford and CJ Spiller should give us pretty good insight into the quality of Johnson’s 4.24 when they run at the Combine this year. I doubt either one of them go under 4.28.

From my experience, we had a bunch of fast track guys at Baylor who couldn’t accelerate as fast as guys on the football team. Now after 50 or 60 it was over. I remember one guy who was a 25 foot LJer and a 10.4-10.5 guy who would get beat in a 40 by one of our safeties who was 220 lbs.

I also think that if the race was on grass and with no starting blocks, it might surprise some people.

Even Charlie has commented that the difference wouldn’t be as great as some people assume, there is a lot of speed in the NFL.

Even Charlie said? Who the hell cares what he says…

Your not talking about a 10.0 guy! your talking about a guy who can JOG 9.9 and run sub 9.6.

Get real if you think he’d be close…not a chance.

And again, who cares about the 10.0 guys who run 4.4, the 100m is about top end speed, all the difference is made there, not the first 40m !

The point is that Usain isn’t destroying people to 40m, his excellence shines through from 60m on. I don’t see why this is so hard to grasp, I never said that CJ would win, just that it would be a lot closer than many people think.

My point is that when it comes to initial acceleration, especially on grass without blocks, I would not be surprised if it was pretty competitive.

I care what Charlie says because he has a lot more perspective on the issue than you do, having worked with numerous NFL teams and two guys under 9.80 I would think that his opinion would be valid.

I’m also basing this off the fact that I have heard that Shawn Springs was right with a number of Dan’s sprinters to 30m back when Dan was at UT.

You are basing your thoughts off of what again? Your own personal opinion?

Who ISN’T Usain killing at 40m? ? ?? ? lol, world class sprinters who run 9.9 or under….

I think Usain IS killing guys who run 10.3 in the 100m AT 40m!!!

And what is close? becuase to non trackster 5m is close, and we all know 5m isn’t close in a 40m race….

Chris who? Get Bolt’s 50m or 50y split or whatever and create one of those greyhound/Marita Koch dog track pacing robots. Let Chris attempt to beat it until his heart is content. If he did race Usain the only way he would win is if Usain didn’t try.

This reminds me of the football players in this area who claim to run 4.3 or 4.4 then show up at a track meet and run 12.

A little mathematics to convert and compare, Chris Johnson runs 4.24 for 40 yrds. 1 yrd = .9144 of a meter. So 40 yrds = 36.576 meters. so to convert his time to a 40 meter time, 4.24 divide by 36.576 multiply by 40 gives Johnson 4.637 for 40 meters. Not including reaction time.
Now Bolts 40 meter split in Berlin was 4.64 and that included a reaction time of .146. So give both guys an equal reaction time and add it to Johnsons 40 meter time puts Johnson at 4.78 V Bolt 4.64. A distance difference of 1.293 meters in Bolts favour at the finish line.

Now for the NFL campers I will also do the reverse for comparison since the 40yrds is your yard stick (pardon the pun). Bolt runs 40 meters with a reaction time properly timed in 4.64 secs. Convert to yards that is 43.745 yards. So divide the 4.64 by 43.745 and multiply by 40 to get the 40 yard time = 4.242 now to even it out with johnsons time subtract Bolts reaction time of .146 = 4.096 . So Bolt runs the NFL combine type 40 yrds .15 of a second quicker than Johnson. Allow Bolt the same type timing and start the is used in the NFL combine and he probably goes sub 4.0 for the 40 yrds.

WE have a winner….bearing in mind also how accurate or un-accurate is Johnsons 4.24 really . The clock was started on first movement, which all us tracksters know is way quicker than the generous reaction time I have given him in my calculations, so if both guys were to go head to head from the blocks from the gun, the gap over 40yrds or even 40 meters would probably be .2 to .3.

A final bit of Mathematical hypothesising…..if Johnson shaved off the dreadlocks and took the 1 kilo of gold out his mouth , or if Usain did the reverse and took on the trinkets and Baubles of a Rastafarian Roma Gypsy would it make a difference to the times? Happy New Year.

It’s will not even be close, it’s not something Bolt should consider racing for less than a million dollars either. If there is a perfect year to do it. It’s 2010, No WC’s or OG’s.

How the heck is a 40-yard timed? Is it actually manually timed by a guy who reacts to the first movement?! First visual movement happens considerably later that the threshold force that triggers reaction time measurement. For a 0.146 RT movements can probably not be visually detected until > 0.2 s. And then a guy has to react to it?! That could easily add 0.3 s (visual reaction is slower that audiitory reaction). That adds up to a clock that starts more than 0.5 s later compared to a FAT time.

A short race like the 40-yard dash seems totally pointless if timing procedures are not rigorously defined and fully automatic in execution.

4.24 divide by 36.576 multiply by 40 gives Johnson 4.637 for 40 meters.

That’s not fair to the 40-yards. The last 3.5 meters are of course much faster that the average speed up to 36.5 meters.

Nope. Grass in Jamaica? Please. The race is only close if it’s short. I can stay within a meter of a gold medalist in the 10m dash. I have no speed.

HAND TIME STARTS AT COMBINE DON’T MEAN DOO DOO. I have timed some big names and I had to do the talk many times.

60 (or 100m) with official timing (FAT). The one and only credible way.

Grass, first movement, hand timing, 40y …….he can be the best receiver or anything, but if he wants to be proclaimed the fastest….US trials are a very good way to start!

I agree. If Bolt isn’t gettin paid top dollar for this he shouldn’t even field questions about it let alone actually do it. As Jay-Z said, “We could talk, but money talks, so talk more bucks.”
