Harry Aikines-Aryeetey’s 170kg clean video was impressive, and good questions were asked about the emphasis on such raw power in the weights vs perhaps actual running focus. With his 200m time and 60m time having a disparity, the real question is when or if he will go sub 10 and improve his speed and speed endurance. The real question is how much resources does one have to developing power throug

How long would you go with combine guys?

Again, I feel the need to defend HAA. There is a large disparity between his 60m and 200m PB for one reason – the last time he ran a 200 was 2005, and he was 16 years old. His 60m PB is from when he was 21.

well said Craig, the yanks seem as confused about this as they are in yards v meters and kilos v pounds…….LOL

We all have IAAF biography access….what is very important is the fact speedfreak shared he cleans once a week. The question is what does his entire set-up look like? What are his speed endurance and maximal speed qualities? Just good questions and some good points.
The other question is how did he get the two stress fractures. I don’t see the guy train daily so messageboard stuff is only conjectures for me. Just curious.

Im not sure how he got his two stress fractures as I wasnt working with him regularly then. It was with his previous coach when he was 18 years old.

Smooth 25-30m runs are long enough as the other combine jump tests are enough for athletes under 220 lbs.
6-8 30m each week is enough and really helps guys getting .05 off when their starts are good. Most kids now out of college have done 6 years of start work since HS combines. Not so much 10 years ago.
15 yard sprints is most of the work.
Help a few facilities out on an hourly basis doing starts so I can’t say how much they do. I don’t do much combine work over the last 5 years as it’s so much rubbing elbows with agents.

Harry got two stress fractures because of his freakish musculature. His frame was too bulky for his spine and the stress took it’s toll. Whether or not this was due to excessive weightlifting at 18 or just genetics I don’t know. However, they have corrected that and he now does regular pilates and has a stringent strengthening routine to protect his back.
It’s clear to me though that whilst harry is super strong, he is very heavy at 87kg which will hamper speed endurance work and subsequently the last part of harry’s race. Not to mention it requires a phenomenal amount of force to get 87kg moving. 170/87 is 1.95 which is close to the best p/w ratios we have seen bar people like edwards and olsson. If harry is still working on speed endurance and max velocity at the same intensity as last year, then it seems logical to say he will run faster with all things being equal.
I find there is always a close correlation between powerclean pr’s and performance on the track with myself and other athletes I train with, it could be different for all out sprinters however. The fact is he is injury free and very strong right now, lets see if it converts. good luck harry!
