    Cross country question

          Hi all,

I'm not a track guy. I'm a football player by trade, but I have a question about something I witnessed during a fairly high level (conference championship) HS cross country meet here.

I do my hill running at a place where it's about the one mile mark for a 3.5 or so mile course. They run on a path that crosses on a perpendicular about 20yds behind where I run.

A pack of the leaders, maybe 5 or 6 guys, running at a fast clip, went by, and they were talking — just shooting the s–t. One guy was talking about his girlfriend. They were definitely in the first mile of the race, but I found this to be a little odd, having never really seen a cross country race.

          Is this normal?

I'd say it's not all that common that far into the race. Sometimes you hear some chatter in the first 800-1000 meters in the race particularly from a stronger team just trying to get into some elses head, but I've rarely seen a prolonged conversation because at race pace it's just not that easy to have a lengthy talk. At the bigger meets it's fairly uncommon.

i concur! as a coach and a runner, if during a race— at that point— then there's not a lot of racing going on.

we typically yell at the people on our team who are talking during the race because they aren't focused.

Cowards…instead of pushing the pace they are doing the last 100 yard sprint…lame.:flaming:

Or maybe they where sprinters with superior speed-reserve?

my team does that only when we are racing pathetic league teams and we run as a pack slow in front of their first runners. but in real meets we dont because it wastes a lot of energy to talk and u cant do it when ur at real race pace

as a cross country runner my self when i am in any race or time trial that talking to much or any at all tend to upset my stumach or even get my breathing also i find it better to consintrate on the goals ahead so there for i do find it strange for these boys to be talking while competing! now if was a warm up or a practise that would be a different story
