          I am going to make this more like a blog, rather than a journal. I thought for some time about posting one on trackshark, but I like and frequent this site more. I prefer knowledge more than hype.

          Background
          Name: Chad Williams
          Age: 26
          Years of experience: 4 (3 college, 1 high school)
          Graduate of TCNJ – former decathlete
          PR’s in decathlon order
          11.40, 6.96m, 14.02m, 6’4, 51.0, 15.50, 42.62m, 4.26m, 47.24 (weaksauce), 4:30.24

          Coaching Experience: Rancocas Valley Regional High School
          Graduate Assistant for Southeast Missouri State for two years
          Currently, assistant coach at the College of Charleston

          Mentors: Steve Dolan – Princeton, JJ – Miami ’07, Joey Haines – SEMO, Gary Williams – Shawnee HS (20+ years)

          I am starting this to give some insight into my thoughts, some training, hopefully some humor and my life in Charleston :)(includes surfing, skateboarding, you know, coastal things).

          One of our fund raisers this year is a track clinic for grades 5-9. My head coach and I split the duties of running the clinic. Each week, there are two clinics available for the kids, one Tuesday evening and the other Thursday. Tonight just so happened to by my night. I actually enjoy running the clinic, but I am usually exhausted by the time I get there. I run two separate practices during the day, each consuming 3 hours of my day due to travel, plus one hour of weight lifting in the evening. It usually ends up being a 12-13 hour day, but it goes fast because the majority of it is eaten up outside.

          Tonight we were short-handed for a little while and I was alone for the first 10 minutes with 70 of the most energetic kids you can imagine, needless to say, my blood pressure was rising. Luckily, our volunteer assistant showed up along with some of my athletes otherwise, I was about to run 1.5 hours of 400m relays. On a side note, it is quite the show to watch a kid whose legs measure 20 inches run a 400, they probably take around 500 steps. It was smooth night despite the lateness of my assistants. Whomever invented the whistle, I owe you one!

          I have more to tell, but I wanna chill and catch a movie tonight. I was able to finagle a free movie from blockbuster because the one I rented last night kept skipping.

          Charleston is my 2nd favorite city (behind Madison). As I just got about a foot of snow in the past 2 days, I’d really rather be there now.

          Many good nights spent at Big Johns…50 cent PBRs…mmmm

          Yeah, I have enjoyed myself immensely in this city so far. There are some pretty good festivals on the weekends which offer loads of delicious seafood. Although, the winters throw some loops, 80’s some days and 40’s others. I will get sunburnt on a monday and by friday be wearing my ski cap. The past few days have felt like late outdoor season, with weather consistently in the high to mid 70’s.

          This is the first college I have been to where I haven’t traveled every weekend in the winter. Over our 8-week winter block, we compete 4 times with our last indoor meet being conference. This set-up is both athlete and coach friendly. There is less administrative work to be done each week: hotels, meals, meet entries, bus rentals, travel reimbursement forms, travel advance forms, etc. The athletes travel less, which reduces travel-related fatigue. On the off weekends, it allows them a little more free time to enjoy being a college student with a beach 8 miles away. Personally, I like the non-competition week set-up the best. We practice Monday, Tuesday, rest Wednesday, practice Thursday, Friday, Saturday and recover again Sunday.

          My training is irratic at best. I try to keep in shape because I do want to compete again this summer, but I have been plagued by nagging injuries incurred from jumping into my athletes practice without warming up at times. This year has been better. I have been doing a full warm up even before doing any demonstrations, but I still lack consistency. I have been training for about 1 month now and am starting to feel like my old self, although sprinting at max speed is still going to take more prehab, rehab, hell just hab. Last week I came through my 400 in 53.7 for my 450 rep. I finished strong although the monkey was starting climb on. My bench press still hovers around 315, even though I am forced to lift with the normal college students in a dungeon somewhere on the corner of campus. I have yet to incorporate too much leg work, because I feel I need to sprint first, and then let the strength enhance my speed. I am gonna take things slow, and hopefullly I can get back to form by summer.

          So we broke two of our medicine balls today and I felt poetic. Every fourth line slurrrs into the next, so read it aloud and you will get the humor.

          To the medballs blue and grey


          It began with a toss and ended with a splat,
          The ooze began leaking, this way and that,
          One-half of team “special” threw that fateful hit,
          Leaving her hands with a grunt, followed by an “Oh shhhh
          She gave it a nudge but it was already dead,
          The end of era, with a toss overhead,
          One and all loved it, and thought it the best,
          So soft and squishy, like a silicone brrrrr
          Brynne and Emily were there, I was a witness,
          While the blue ball was dead, the throws were not finished,
          The grey ball should save us, if we hadn’t ruined our luck,
          Three tosses in, I see sand, “What the fff
          Forget the throws, let’s move on to something new,
          We can’t use them anymore, they’re done, they’re threw,
          Beaten and broken, both balls need a stitch,
          Where are others? in the van? Son of a b*%*%!
