looking to do indoor track this season, wondering was shoe i should buy for training and races for indoor sprinter. will primarily be doing 60 meter dash.

can i just buy any outdoor spike and use them for indoor races? this is for division 3 college competition.

          thanks!

To the best of knowledge they don’t make different spikes for indoor and outdoor sprinting, any spikes designed for sprinting should do you fine. Try on a couple of pairs and see what you like.

No difference unless your indoor track isn’t an actual track! If you haven’t got a real track they won’t allow spiked footware

But there is no difference in spikes as callam stated

Don’t know about other countries, but some indoor tracks in the US don’t allow spikes, some only allow spikes in the finals, and some are very specific about the type and/or length of spike.

          Best,

Serious! Gee you gys have it rough! I assume the flooring is not classed as actual track? As in mondo etc!

All our indoor facilities are classed as real track and therefore spiked footware is unrestricted.

Quite the opposite. Tracks with excellent surfaces can be the most restrictive.

As a high school track coach, I took the following steps, particularly when traveling to a national event. Check the rules before travel, bring a couple spike keys, bring some bags of various sizes (e.g. 1/4″ pyramids and 1/8″ needles), bring some blank spikes in the event there is a spike count limit, and bring some cash to purchase spikes for those venues that require a certain spike for their track.

          Best,
          Christopher

Edit: I checked the Simplot rules for an example of flats in the prelims, and your comments about the flooring are correct. They limit spikes to the finals (and 60mH prelims) to preserve the wood.

It’s ridiculous, because a lot of the tracks that won’t allow high schoolers to wear spikes are collegiate tracks that definitely DO allow you to wear spikes. It pays to have a cheap pair of spikeless racing flats (like these https://www.runningwarehouse.com/descpage-BMA14M2.html ) in case you get to a place that doesn’t allow even a spike plate (which I’ve run across).

But since the OP is doing college track, any sprint spike is fine.

Yes, a good suggestion. One year I had to scramble to get an athlete a pair of racing flats before catching a flight.

          Christopher
