Hey guys, im new to the forums…
Anyways my question is how much of a difference does body fat have on your speed/times?
My optimal weight is around 125-130lb (5 ‘8 15 years old). But over the last 3 weeks i stopped counting my calories/macros and gained a bit of fat, went from 125 (8-9% BF) to 137 (15% BF).
So how much does it effect someone?
Effects of body fat on times?

There isn’t a practical way to calculate the effects of mass on performance. 125 is not an optimum for your height, on a BMI that is very close to being underweight. You will put on weight as you grow, don’t worry about it.
Well currently im at 137. My goal is to get back down to about 130 then continue gaining weight slowly.

at 15 y/o and that height, i would prob say your under weight at the mo.
also that bodyfat change wont do much against your speed at your age.
Stop worrying about body comp, or you will end up having issues later in life. just train and enjoy it. your body will take care of itself for the moment
-
At your age, just try to eat healthy and train hard. Following that rule I’m sure you won’t gain too much weight.
At older track and field athletes I would be more careful because too much body fat can effect performance by a lot. -

No worries haha won’t have body issues. Oddly im not even the smallest on my team, i have friends that are in the 100’s, and 110’s lol there about my height.
The reason i asked this question was because I think im seeing a decrease in performance, and i felt like crap at one point where i almost quit.I don’t if it was due to the fact that i haven’t taken time off or the whole weight issue.
Basically iv pretty much been running about 5 seasons straight(in the summer i was only running about 3x/week but i had 4-5+ gym days each week and 2mile runs 2-3/week in the evenings), and lifting 2-5/week 2-3 of those seasons. I took about 1 week off after the summer but never really took any time off after that. -

Even at your age, five years in the gym doing anything close to a real workout should have packed on some muscle, and running even half of what you run at your sleight weight, how could you have any body fat at all? Something doesn’t jive here. -

Read it again, i said iv been running almost 5 SEASONS straight (Indoor Track, Outdoor track, summer track, cross country, indoor track)and i started going to the gym during summer track so almost 3 seasons in the gym.Summer: 3x track practice and 4-6x gym per week.
Took like 1 week off from running after it ended, still went to the gym.
Cross Country: 5-6x practice and 2x gym per week.
took like 2 days off
Indoor Track: 5-6x practice and 2-4x maybe 5x week. -

Simply. Eating more than your body needs. With modern high caloric processed junk food it is not hard to eat around 4k or even more calories per day. It is much harder with healthy food.. that’s why my advice is to eat clean food if you don’t want to count your macros.

So how much does it effect someone?First off even if you ate McDo 6 times a day for 3 weeks straight you couldn’t possibly go from 125 to 137 at your age with that training volume or even gain 7% BF…and 125×1.07=133lbs…I highly doubt that at 125 you were able to put on 4lbs of lean muscle in 3 weeks to reach 137 with the background that you are describing here…that just doesn’t add up in the real world, sorry.
We’re not talking about a 400 lbs person here, nor a sedentary person, so no disrespect to you, at best the person who took your BF measurements made a mistake or that whole thing is just BS cause the only way i see 125 (8-9% BF) to 137 (15% BF) in 3 weeks happening is if and your thyriod went effed-up at the same time you started eating your mom’s estradiol pills for breakfast for performance enhancement purposes.
Second thing, at your age you shouldn’t count calories, it’s not healthy.
Eat whatever you need, whenever you need to, yes you can go on the clean side but don’t make it an obsession. Just make sure to include plenty of fruits and veggies in your diet ,stay well hydrated, always!and remember that sugar pie is not a meal by itself and you’ll be fine.Depending on your level a few years down the road, you shouln’t worry about BF between 2-5 years again unless you become seriously overweight, and again it won’t happen if you train even half as much as you say.
Lastly, if your question is ”how much bodyfat affects performance” just ask!

Trust me you can when you start eating whole trays of brownies, tubs of ice cream, and frosting…Also when i went down to 125 i know i lost a little bit of muscle, cause i use to be 140 (15% BF). Some days i hit 6k+ calories even 7k-8k at times lol i was HUNGRY.
But the whole point of this thread was to ask how much bodyfat affects performance. -
short answer:at your age and weight 15pct or under, you won’t notice.
On top of that too many other factors infulence performance.
You’re no even close to your true potential yet so I would concentrate on other aspects first as there are sooooo many that are much more important at this point.Don’t worry about,BW or BF, just enjoy track/training, make sure to always have fun and ejoy what you do as BF ratios is just some of the icing on the cake a few years down the road.
-
Are you for real? entire tubs of ice cream?
yea, I have a huge appetite thats why i track macros/calories cause if i don’t i can eat all day.
There was one day where i eat a whole tray of brownies, a tub of ice cream, whole case of frosting, like 4-5 peanut butter sandwich, and a whole much of other food…Good times lol -

If you care about future performance start caring about what you’re feeding yourself. I don’t care how fast your metabolism is, if you are putting down tubs of ice cream and pans of brownies then the solution is simple:
learn some self control.

I eat pretty clean for the most part, but i kinda just let myself go for a second and eat whatever i wanted.
I have tons of self control, imagine being 15 and not being able to eat jack while you watch our friends destroy fried chicken or pizza…It got to me after a while.

Replace the word food with drugs or alcohol and you’ve just OD’d (because of doing something you’re friends are doing). That’s a bit worrying. Improper diet is very dangerous when it comes to health risks down the line. It’s something I wish I was more aware of earlier on.
I don’t mean to sound like a jerk, but I work in education and I see a lot of overweight children who are having their future health and happiness crippled by poor diet and lifestyle choices.
But this doesn’t mean you can’t eat pizza, have fried chicken, etc. It means you don’t eat the whole pizza. You don’t eat the entire fried chicken. You pair the junk food with dark veggies, etc, and it’s easier to eat healthier while still having tasty meals.
The earlier you make healthy eating a habit the easier it will be to maintain that habit later in life.
-
If you’re looking to peak in a competition, you can clean up your diet and shed some fat, but if not, don’t worry too much about it for now. Fat affects mainly your relative strength by incresing more body weight. I doubt you’re fat enough to restrict range of motion.
However, for your health and energy and all, it would be nice to clean up the diet. There’s difference between gaining weight with junk food and gaining weight with lean meat+whole grain+fruits+nuts and seeds (veggies are healthy, but they don’t really add much to calories).
