I’m looking at my schedules and trying to figure out how to manage everything and I’m looking to hear thoughts on the fastest meets in the spring/summer in North America. Obviously, these meets would have to be open to unattached athletes.

Off the top of my head, I know UTEP’s meet in April and Tennessee’s Sea Ray Relays also in April are notoriously fast with near perfect conditions and good competition. Georgia Tech and FSU also have meets, in early May, that also tend to be good.

If anybody has any ideas or thoughts, it’d be appreciated. Looking for good conditions + competition.

Sea Ray is usually good, although the winds have been known to be quite high at times.

GTech is always hot and fast.

If its not 40 degrees out, UW-Osh has a ridiculously fast mondo track with wide lanes and a generous curve if you feel like hitting up something longer than a 100.

I’m gonna hit as many of their meets as possible once its warm out.

Of course now that I’m thinking about it thats gonna turn into a 3 1/2 hour drive for you so you’ve probably got better options.

Hillsdale Relays has had some great over the years. Fast Mondo surface.
University of Iowa Musco Invite – Brand new mondo surface.
Kansas Relays
Mt. Sac – AWESOME
Drake and Penn if you run fast enough and know the right people.
Jim Bush Classic

Those are a few that I’ve raced at over the years. Hillsdale in recent years has gotten better because they’re starting to get teams who don’t have the budget to travel to Penn and Drake because of the economy. Mt. Sac, you just can’t go wrong. Also Pomona Pitzer has a meet the day before that’s loaded with people. Go west and south.

There are two very fast facilities and meets you should do in SoCal:

1. Mt. Sac Relays – there are always fast times, and you can probably get in the exhibition 100m if you post an early season 10.50 – otherwise – you could get in the open or the invitational.
2. Azusa Pacific – Holds a meet – either the Meet of Champions or BC invite – I think both are open to unattached runners. There are always a handful (5-8) sub 10.50 guys there – but the main thing is there is ALWAYS a prevailing wind on the straight, and the track is extremely quick. Last year, a bunch of deca guys PR’d there by over 0.20.
3. Hayward Field has a summer series that is open meets, and I think they have a couple Thursday night open meets in the April/May timeframe. (Don’t quote me on that, though)

Liberty University has a crazy fast track. The curves are wider than normal, so you really get that whiplash effect getting into the homestretch.

They have a Twilight in late April which usually has great weather. The competition is usually pretty good too, since it’s practically a last chance meet.
