I have been having trouble getting some of my high school male sprinters to get full extension from the shoulder through the toe when driving out of the blocks. I have one athlete in particular who has run some good races for me (10.8, 21.9) but still has improper starting mechanics. This particular athlete seems to almost lift up with his hips as he is driving out causing him to be hunched over 3-4 strides into the race. I am not sure what to do to fix this problem…does anyone have any good ideas to help train this mechanic? Furthermore, is there just some cue that I should be giving him that would help solve this problem?
Full extension out of blocks

Try superman starts onto a high jump mat. Also by cueing the arm to extend fully up and out at the sound of the gun may fix the problem. The legs do whatever the arms do. If he is not extending the arm fully the legs may be cutting off early as well.

stop trying to give cues and get them stronger esp in the post chian, most young sprinters cant get full ext bc they lack strength. some runners are quad runners which tends to hinder them from achieving full ext.

Superman starts onto a HJ mat? I'm not familiar with what you are talking about I don't think.

Yes, we've been working on his posterior chain strength for some time now and he is actually quite strong. Also, we are getting close to the state meet so the time for strength development is nearing its end.

[/quote]take a med ball hold in front squat and leap forward in a explosive manner onto a high jump mat. make sure to achieve full body ext. during your gpp phase you could do med ball hop 1-2-3. its never too late to work on post chain strength no matte where you are in your training bc during things like rev hypers dont take much from you.

In addition to what was mentioned, acceleration work done on a hill or with resistance often forces the athlete in to complete extension.
