Since he has already equalized with Asafa Powell for the title, it proves he has it in him, so I definitely think he will do it again, he's in top form and if he can do it once, he'll sure do it again, maybe even during the remainder of this season. I think Asafa Powell will not set a new record (yet), because Gatlin is fired up and has proved himself at this early stage in the season, whereas Powell hasn't.

What's with Powell falling so far off the radar? Hasn't he recovered from the groin injury yet?

Powell hasn't fallen off the radar. He won Commonwealth Games with a very impressive performance and after that ran impressively at Penn Relays (10.10 jogging the last 40m) and elsewhere.

asafa shuts down any wear from 50m to 60m in the race i mean i think he can run in the 9.80s even though he has only done enogh to win

You don't run 9.93 and shut down half-way through the race, who are you getting this information from?

Asafa didn't even go under 10 at the commonwealth games.

Go watch the last few videos of Asafa. He pulls up less than 10m from the line.

he ran 9.93 @ pre fontaine and he slowed down the last 20-25m

I watched the prefontaine classic and i will admit that MAYBE the last 2 (yes, 2) strides are when he eases up, but to say to that he is shutting it down the last 20-25 m is not accurate.

I think many of you are confusing "shutting it down" with staying relaxed.  I will admit Asafa is running quite relaxed, but I guarantee he ran it ALL OUT through 95 meters.

Like I said, you don't break 10 and run anything less than 100%.  The reason times drop are more so due to better execution and better conditions.  Asafa was out to win, and winning his heat didn't advance him to the finals because there was no finals.  So, he had no reason to save his energy or shut it down.

Although Gatlin has run some amazing times this season I still think Asafa's runs tend to look more impressive. His relaxation is unbelievable and despite shutting it down early he still consistently runs impressively fast times. My money is on Asafa when (if) they go head to head this year.

          I look at this way:

Asafa gets out hard and then relaxes to the finishes, all the while, maintaining his form/speed rather well.

Gatlin gets out and powers all the way through the finish, while maintaining good form but a little more tense.

Gatlin will take him because Asafa will press and tense up and actually decelerate more rapidly than if he were staying relaxed through the finish.

my 2 cents – Look Good? or Run Fast? I choose the latter.

One day the showdown will occur (at least I hope) and the words exchanged become nothing more than words, for I may be right or may be wrong, but the race should prove to be nothing short of fantansic.  🙂

look both men are young and have yet to reach their full capabilities.  Barring injury both are going to break the record a couple of more times.

As for this season Gatlin all the way.  Besides when was the last time Gatlin lost a major competition.  He is a gamer.

well Asafa powell just matched the world record again 9.77 at gateshead  and has matched Justin gatilins record

so now all that talk about asafas speed has now been put to rest your pretty much gonna have to look At them as equals from now on

Using some backward logic I'll now pronounce Asafa twice as fast as Gatlin because he ran the WR twice to Gatlin's one time.

On a more serious note, a 9.77 at Gateshead is astounding as the track is not known to be very fast at all.
