Hey, I'm looking at getting back into my 10.9 form, and maybe going out for my collegiate team next year, we'll see.  But all in all I just really like to get back into tip top shape.  Being a Physical Education major, it wouldn't hurt I guess.

But anyways I was looking at taking these supplements:

          1. Glutamine
          2. Creatine
          3. Multi-vitamin

I was wondering if I should take a protein supplement like whey, but I haven't decided yet.  Wondering what you guys would think.

Also was wondering if anyone had some good prices on this stuff, I'm a poor college kid so I would really not want to spend too much.

Also I have never taken supplements before, so if I'm way off on this stuff, just tell me.  I'm hear to learn.

          Thanks

I think you are off to a good start.  Since you're on a budget I might replace the glutamine with whey protein.  Bodybuilding.com has cheap whey protein.  It also has a feature where you can see a chart of item, servings, and price.  Alot of people say you need to get magic enchanted microfiltered whey protein isolate but if you're on a budget, just get the cheapest stuff that doesn't upset your stomach.  Try Optimum Nutrition whey.

Just because a product doesn't cause GI distress doesn't mean it is being absorbed properly.

I would go with BSL whey/casein and ditch the glutamine and creatine for now and take fish oil.

This goes back to the age old argument of pricing.  For example, is BSL whey ($10/lb) 2x "better" than a wpc($5/lb) from trueprotein?  Is a 20 day supply of OmegaBrite ($30) 10x+ "better" than a 400 cap Fish Oil bottle($13) from WalMart?  Is Biotest beta alanine 10x better than a bulknutrition product?

And how does the low grade foods that college cafeterias supply fit into the mix?

I live off campus, so I don't have to eat the awful cafeteria food.  I usually eat A LOT of grilled chicken, with either like rice or some some other side dish that isn't like french fries.

You guys really don't think I should take the creatine? I know I said I'll listen and wont question your judgement, its just that in reading on this board.  I have found that a lot of people love creatine.  And they said its probably the most beneficial legal supplement out there.

But just keep coming with the suggestions, I don't mean to attack you, I'm just curios about it.

I think creatine is good.  I did not recommend dropping it.  You will get varying opinions on this one.

          Mortac8,

Fuzzy math and I have heard the same bs for years.

Trimega is 20 per month. Why do you think cheaper products are better? Because it fits your budget. I have a COA of a brand that had 12 DHA/45 EPA at half the price of Trimega. Value is what people need to look at. When products are using chemicals that inflame the GI line and you are getting flu like symptoms go use the omegawave pal.

Concentrate is cheaper but many athletes have lactose problems and what percent are you getting protein?

A honda is half the price of a BMW and it's not half the car. My point is value. WHY IS IT CHEAPER? Because they get the "hook up?" Nope. Purity is key as chlorine is not what I want in my creatine and I want my whey to be free of bacteria as fat (WPC) becomes rancid in hours.

What is trimega?  You mean triomega?  Is that still in production?  How does one determine value & purity of available products?  Consumerlab?

if ones on a budget i guess its not all about value or quality or whatever.
just get the best products you can afford in reasonable amounts.

          fishoil and vitamins/minerals are fundamental,

then i highly recommend whey protein isolate because it seems to make a difference (in my case at least : )

creatine is the next thing  i´d get

then glutamine (its an awesome product but in most cases you need pretty much (20g a day?) to feel a difference,  and the basic need is probably fullfilled through your whey protein.)

if its only about short term performance enhancement  i guess you could first get whey and creatine under the premise of a healthy nutrition.

          good luck

Alright thanks guys, I will probably end up going with a multi-vitamin, probably just the centrum performance, its cheap and easily assessable.  And then a decent thing of whey protein for now.  Maybe closer to the season next year, I will hit the creatine.

          Thanks for all the help

I think it depends on the particular product. Trueprotein is BSL, so they aren't selling crap. I wouldn't buy low quality fish oil as it usually lacks much DHA/EPA (what you are really looking for, so the "value" isn't really a value) and can be contaminated w/ mercury and other hard metals. With Trimega and NOW both being very affordable, I would get those if I was going to use fish oil at all (which I do). With protein, I like the BSL flavor systems and have used it before, but I don't see a problem (if you are on a tight budget) with getting a 10lb bag of Optimum Whey, which tastes decent in water and is good quality. Creatine and protein are so widely available, it isn't too hard to find good and affordable products, but in my experience there is a lot of garbage once you go beyond those (ie fish oil, aminos, etc.).

just wanted to make sure we are talking about WHEY protein and not weightgainers or whatever

Again what the hell is trimega?  Can someone provide a link?

          BSL's fish oil line https://www.blackstarlabs.com/blackstarlabs_old/product_info.php?cPath=24&products_id=379.

NOW's is slightly cheaper, probably because you can get it in straight oil form (w/ lemon flavoring). Otherwise, prices are about the same if you get them in caps.

How is the blackstarlabs stuff better than the above?  Someone explain it to me.  I don't get it.

I don't think it is, although I am not sure the process each goes through. I use NOW brand and love it, but I use the straight oil instead of the caps. Makes taking 8-12grams much easier.

I can get Fish oil for .35 cents for 2000 capsules. Anyone in?

Dude chill.  I am asking seriously.  So you're basically saying I should just buy everything from blackstarlabs… christ I have I purchased like $300+ worth of whey supremacy for myself and others last year along with many bottles of Kreataine Ultra.  Oh and Frost too.  Will you answer my questions now?  So Walmart sucks and NOW Foods sucks.  What else?

Its all about the Nordic Naturals Lemon Fish Oil Caps!
Only ones that don't taste like fish when you burp.

Oh, and although expensive.. Joe Defranco's new pre workout bar is the sh**!
I ate it before I PR'd last weekend. Within15 mins. it had me buzzin. Caffine and Tyrosine in an energy bar!!

I can't get into arguements about price anymore with people….you get what you pay for. Raw ingredients or final dose after encapsulation. Big difference that most don't care about knowing the reasons why. China is not the answer to everything and there are reasons why things are cheaper. For example ergopharm AMP is a fair price and I am a big fan of Carlton's fish oils in bulk.

Some good products available such as Vigor (similar to FROST) by DS. I just care about manufacturers.

:bouncy: I would say cycle with the creatine ans use monohydrate when doing you general prep or background work. When sprinting and max velocity work is involved especially when fatigue will set in then use CEE.

          flow on February 8, 2007 at 10:56 am #62762

did you actually feel a difference between monohydrate and concentrate?
