Well i was just hired in as a new ass. track coach for a pretty large d-1 high school. Im an all american in distance so naturally i was thinking i was hired in for that. Well the school or head coach thought my skills would be better used as a throws coach (no im not joking)

So here is my question or plea

What can i do as a new throws coach? any reading? basics? any help at all?

I do know training theory so i can put together lifting and balance and such but basic tech. i have just about no knowelldge. any help?

There are some basic books out there. Plus check out the articles section of the site. Here are 4 good articles for starters:

I wanted to add that I’ve seen throws coaches at the HS level be VERY successful just by getting their athletes insanely strong. With the lighter HS implements a strong kid can achieve a lot without mastering the technique. If you have both technique and explosive strength and power then you become a great HS thrower.

I would make sure to get:

The Throws Manual and The Mechanics of Athletics
The Omnibook is also a good buy.

If anyone wants any media from the National Throws Coaches Association please check out my company website. We sell all of the media for less than NTCA as well as the Throws Manual that KT referenced. If you find any of the DVDs or books cheaper anywhere else (shipping included) please let me know and I will beat the price by 10%.

Learn what blocking is, about 50% of HS throws coaches have no idea or conceptualization of blocking.

You can get Rob’s SP presentation at my company store as part of one of the NTCA throws video.
