This is just a hypothetical discussion…I was bored lol

For everyone who's keen, just fill out your favourite squad of all time, anyone from any era, and any country, just choose your favourite's, and some reasoning if you'd like.

          *4×100
          *4×400

and for further interest (these are probally a lot more intriguing as it's in-between distances)

          *4×150
          *4×300

          also

          *4×200
          *4×800

You don't have to state your team for each relay. Remember, who runs what leg is also important in this discussion. I personally find the 4×150 and 4×300 as perhaps the most compelling as they could involve 100/200 and 200/400 runners respectively. Do you choose guys to race up or race down? The athletes who are already hybrids are probably the safest bet.

          4×100
1.) Jon Drummond (his opening in Atlanta? games was crazy)/ Carl Lewis (awesome athlete, nough said)
2.) Asafa Powell (quickest runner ever)
3.) Tyson Gay (quickest curve ever recorded en route to 19.68)
4.) Maurice Green (his anchor legs make him appear 1000x faster then he usually does-best anchor ever?)

          4×400
          1.) Jerome Young I dunno?
          2.) Butch Renolds I spose?…?
3.) Jeremy Wariner (2004 NCAA, no more COULD be said)
4.) Michael Johnson (fastest runner ever – makes a lot of sense)

          4×800
1.) Seb Coe (best middle distance runner ever…so far, though El gurr??? and Kipketer go close because of records)
2.) Bordakovfisky?? (such talent, would've anchored except his problems with kicking judgement)
          3.) Steve Cram?
          4.) Wilson Kipketer (WR holder)

          4×200
1.) Tyson Gay (4th fastest ever)
2.) X-man (2nd fastest ever – has to be in consistent form though)
3.) Wallace Spearmon (3rd fastest ever)
4.) Michael Johnson (one night in Atlanta…)

          4×150
          1.) Maurice Greene
          (in his 200m days)
2.) Carl Lewis (just awesome)/ or maybe Bailey
3.) Tyson Gay (best 100/200 combo ever-so why not lol)
4.) Michael Johnson (he's my hero – I couldn't leave him out-but has to be from that day in USA, Atlanta, 1 August, 1996)

          4×300
          1.) Wallace Spearmon
(200m specialist, but has ambitions in 400m, strength an issue but should be smokin to 300)
2.) X-man or Butch Reynolds (you pick)
3.) Jeremy Wariner (can run fast enough 2's)
          4.) Michael Johnson (WR holder)

I got stuck with 4×400 on legs 1 and 2, i'm sure someone can correct me. As you can see many of my picks are recent dudes, I did that cause they are the fastest lol. If you want you can also guess the time your relays will run. Aern't many relays where I live so I can't really judge too well how my temas would've faired.

          4×100
          Drummond, Always a strong starter
Powell or Spearman, Powell if he can handle 2nd leg as its longest
Gay or Spearman, Spearman if Powell runs 2nd
          Greene, GOAT

          4×4
          Young, A favourite of mine
          MJ, WR Holder
Wariner, Has a Great 3rd Leg
          ….

          4×150
          Donavon Bailey
Linford Christie, Him and Bailey purely because of there 150m times
Gay, In a 200 his 150m (after first 50m) is amazing
          MJ, 200m WR

          4×300
          Spearman
          Kerron Clement
          Wariner
          MJ

          These are all US teams…

4×1…the only question is who you put on anchor…Lewis, Greene, and Hayes are the top 3 anchors of all-time!
          Spearmon
          Greene
          Lewis
          Hayes

4x200m…by my count this team would break the world record by about a second.
          Carter
          Gay
          Spearmon
          Johnson

4x400m…this team would beat the WR by about a second as well
          Reynolds
Watts (he was a BEAST in 92)
          Wariner
          Johnson

          4×1:
ben johnson to gay to asafa to gatlin

          4×4:
marita koch to mike johnson to kevin young to butch

Two wrongs don't make a right.

          4×4:
marita koch to mike johnson to kevin young to butch

I don't think Young and Butch are manly enough to run with Koch.

If you put anyone other than Carl Lewis on the anchor of the 4 x 1 you are making a big mistake.

I'm a big time Carl fan but I saw video of Bob Haye's anchor leg in 64 and I'm a believer. I believe it was the fastest relay split ever recorded despite being on a slower track than later eras.

Good point.  However, such as been mentioned on occasion, might've Lewis been able to sprint an equivalent if he had to rollup like Hayes needed to do?

Perhaps I should have clarified….it was the fastest relay split ever run….and it was on CINDER.

Believe me, I think Lewis is one of the holy track gods but I think I'd put him on 2nd leg. I'd probably go Greene, Lewis, Spearmon, Hayes- 36.90!

How was the timing done to get Hayes split?

Larry James and Lee Evans ran some great splits (yes I know it was Mexico) in the 400m, give them a relay chance with a modern track. The question would Watts run his same time in the 60s? From a talent perspective we must look at that and not just times.

How was the timing done to get Hayes split?[quote]I believe it was via video analysis using the frame rates…probably not as good as today's around-the-track split taking systems but accurate enough to know the guy ran amazingly fast.

I agree. That's why Carl is on the list. If this were based on times alone Carl and Hayes (if we use open 100m times) wouldn't even be on the list.
