is is simply not recommended for distance runners 5,000 metres and up to lift heavy in the preseason?
and is there any real difference for the 800 and 1500 metre guys?

As a half miler I would def. lift for strength (heavy). It can have positive effects on running economy.

I am an advocate of lifting heavy for any and all athletes.  If you are able to do it properly and increase relative strength, you will be well on your way to better performance via running economy as well as increased force application into the ground.

I agree. Don't bother with the typical distance runner BS: arm swings with 5 lb plates, unweighted jump step-ups onto a box, and db flys. Stick to compound lifts and if you've got limited time lift heavy with lower rep ranges.

Are unweighted jump step-ups onto a box the same thing as alt. leg step-up jumps from a high box or bench/dynamic step-ups? If so, why wouldn't those be good? Or are you talking about those puny little quick steps they do onto a box?

Don't want to speak for anyone, but I believe he is indeed referring to the alt. leg step-up jumps.  It's not that they are a bad lift, it's just that they would be far less beneficial for strength gains than a heavy squat or deadlift, which are rarely seen in the distance runner's workout.  I use alternate leg step-up jumps quite frequently, but in the realm of GS circuits or perhaps in a warm-up for a speed development session.

OK, sounds good, thanks. I thought he was saying the exercise is BS (I've been using it for GPP/SPP multi-jump circuits, and also w/ a weight vest during higher powered plyo days w/ more recovery b/n sets). Yeah, I agree, they could benefit from incorporating the heavy stuff.
