i was at a D1 meet yesterday and i was visiting with a D1 jump coach who told me he keeps reps high for his women athletes. his big lifts are bsq (3×8) and all the olympic lifts (reps of 5 – not sure about sets). i just wanted to see if anyone could confirm this.
higher reps for females?

Several use this setup in an attempt to keep endocrine levles similar to their male counterparts.

ok. is there any risk of hypertrophy for female athletes?
Not really….other than the rare athlete, women’s natural endocrine system just won’t support much non-functional hypertrophy.

please help me out. my female sprinters have followed a 3-1 loading and unloading scheme since november. for the bsq they have gone 3×6 >>> 3×8 >>> 5×4 >>> 6×3. we are currently in a pre-comp mini-peak phase. we start outdoor in march. we are tentatively planning a gpp/spp for march (5 wks), pre-comp in april (4 wks) and comp (3 wks) in may. what do you suggest for reps and set schemes? i was planning on 4×5, 6×3 and 3×2-3 for boys – but what about girls?

Personally, I don’t switch up my male and female schemes for my collegiate athletes because my group is too large for it to be logistically manageable. For the two post collegiate females I’m working with, their power work set and rep schemes are the same as the post-collegiate guys but they do more weight lifting circuits on easy days where the reps are 8-20.

Any resistance training will enhance endocrine profile. Since women naturally have less testosterone they may benefit from a higher total volume of strength work.
