I pulled my hamstring the 1st of May. The trainer said he thought it was a grade 1. I don’t know, personally I think it might have been grade 2. I rehabbed and in 3 weeks was reaching close to top speed on acceleration runs. I was high jumping just as well as I had before the pull. Then I pulled it again in practice on a long jump, not quite as severely as before, but in the same spot. At regionals I taped it heavily and tried to high jump, but restrained it again on the first jump. Again not quite so bad, but in the same spot.
I figured, “ok, since it took 3 weeks to heal last time and it wasn’t quite 100%, I should have no problems as long as I give it proper rest and rehab throughout the summer.” So far, WRONG. I haven’t restrained it, but it seems like I’m on a roller coaster that’s going nowhere fast. My flexibility is back to normal, maybe a bit better. There have been days when it felt great, like it was healed. Then after a rehab session it would start to feel sore (tender)again, and the soreness stays constantly for 3-4 days, sometimes more. Then it starts to feel better, I start rehabbing again, it’ll feel good, and then it’ll feel bad. It’s been 6 weeks since the last strain. However I feel about the same now as I did 3 weeks ago. It doesn’t feel like I’m making real progress.
Can someone with experience please help out or give advice? I don’t think it should be taking this long. Especially since the 1st strain was way worse and I was almost full speed in only 3 weeks. The last one wasn’t so bad but it’s been 6 weeks already. I’ve been following the rehab program from the athletic trainer, have seen a physical therapist for flexibility, have tried ice, heat, contrast showers, sauna therapy. I don’t know what else I can do. I haven’t tried accupunture, ART (not quite sure what it is) or massage yet (basically no soft tissue work, all training and temperature work). I’m thinking about trying massage.
It’s extremely frustrating because I’m supposed to be doing the summer running and lifting sheets from college and have only been able to do the upper body and core. Meanwhile the leg workouts are only getting harder and I’m falling further behind.
Edit: By the way, I had X-rays and they were good, no bone fragments pulled off. I did not have an MRI at any point. The first doctor I talked to said it wasn’t necessary unless it wasn’t healing. I’m thinking about it now.
