What weight were you when you ran the 53? It seems to me that if you could run 53 sec at age 48, then you must know plenty about training already! I can't find much info on heavy guys trying to run the 400m. I'm told that dropping weight will pay off "big time".
I just got into running 400m this year. I'm also 5-10 and 225 lbs (36 years old). I'm very interested in the relationship between weight loss and 400m times (for me).
I was a powerlifter for many years (rotator cuff injuries), but never ran track. I started in March weighing 231 and running 93 secs. By April I was running 81 secs with no weight loss. In May I improved to 74 secs. Last week (July 5) I raced some joggers from the local masters track club. I managed a 66.97. I'm now weighing 225. I plan to let my weight drop to 210 while keeping as much strength as possible.
I would love to get under 60 secs!
