Because my wife and I are expecting our first child in less than a month we've both decided to take a year hiatus from serious athletic pursuits since the competitive season calendar of our current sport of choice came at an inconvenient time (now) and competing was quite time intensive. As a result, I've been taking a much less structured approach to training for the past couple months. I

Interesting, I'd never be able to do the BP, 10 reps at 250lbs would blow me away, not to mention 45 others I would have to complete at this weight, I could probably handle the 250 lb squats and the 150 lb cleans.  The pull ups would be interesting too.  It might take me a whole day to complete and I would be toast for 2 weeks, but try it on one of your lesser athletes there in their 3rd or 4th year and see how they respond it might suprise you.

I'm almost 48 hours post workout now and I think the worst is behind me. Walking down stairs is still uncomfortable but otherwise I'm much better than yesterday.

I think the only place I'd consider using it on a track athlete would be as a punishment workout (with attainment of a goal time  or more punishment) or as an early season gut-check workout.

when i used to do bodybuilding we once took a barbell to the woods with a truck and squatted for about half a day.  that was pretty stupid. however i think i can feel your pain…

I heard of two men who got into a squatting contest in prison and one died. It was for number of repetitions at a light weight…they saw something like 10,000 reps throughout the day. Too many toxins and he died.

That's rhabodmyolysis. I can't verify the exact story but it is certainly possible.

Did i read that right, and you said 125% of bodyweight for the bench?  If that's the case, then that workout would KILL me, as I would be benching 235 with a 1RM of 255.

But either way, that workout looks like DEATH.

Nope BP was actually 100%….that's a typo….fixing it now. The BP was actually somewhat of a 'rest station' despite probably being my weakest of the four exercises.

Volume is the devil.  You should have a debate with a TJer I know who trains an average of 1x per week and can still go 50'+ easy.  There was also some dude at an indoor meet a few years ago on TV.  Ran the 400 in like 45.9.  Said he ran once per week.

Maybe you can do this workout once a week and become elite  :eureka:

I think it would take a little more than this (maybe a rocket pack) to make me elite.

I've seen guys jump well on low volume routines but 45.9 indoors….is that true? The closest I've seen to that was Calvin and Alvin Harrisson who I heard trained very infrequently (but then again both were subsequently busted for doping).

Sorry I don't remember who it was.  It was at a major US indoor meet on TV a few years back.  The announcers had a little segment about this guy how he only trains once per week.  I will dig up the details if I can.
Edit: I got nothin'.  I cannot find any info on that 45. guy.  Maybe one day I will remember who the hell it was.  I had never heard of the guy at the time and I never heard about him again.  It was someone from the US…

Didn't Xavier Carter run 45.x his first indoor meet after the football season with <1 week of training?

I am pretty sure it was the 200m he ran and he ran 20.6 or something. 200m on raw talent is a little more believable than an elite 400m.

That guy's a freak though. An outlier. I actually use that example to show just how freakish he is. It wasn't like he wasn't training though. He was training 5-6 days a week during football season and then took off 10 days of organized practice.

I did this workout again today for the first time since I originally wrote about it.  I thought I stormed through it last time and thought I'd have a tough time beating my previous time. I was wrong. My time improved by quite a bit. I really must have been hurting last time. The funny thing is, my absolute strength numbers are actually down a little. My overall fitness level is up though and my body weight is down a little bit. It still sucked pretty bad though and I'll probably pay for it tomorrow. I think I'll wait another couple months before I try it again.

how did you have time to train 2-3hrs and coach other athletes? do you have 2-3hrs to train now since you have a kid?

When I was at LSU I trained 2-3.5 hours each day because I didn't have any administrative or recruiting duties….just doctoral studies. At USMA, I don't have time to train more than about 90 minutes each day and often times my workouts normally average considerably shorter than that due to time restrictions. In fact, about 2x a week I end up having to do a workout that only lasts about 10 minutes. Right now, I don't have a sport performance goal…..I'm more fitness oriented and try to compete against myself in a wide variety of activities like 5k, 30m, weight room maxes (both for load and reps), timed circuits like the one above, rowing ergometer tests, etc. There's practically no periodization whatsoever because my schedule (especially including travel) makes things so chaotic and unpredictable.
