There are three members today doing individual workouts with NFL teams this week. Two of them had good enough pro days to pick up agents and grab the attention of scouts on the spot. One is doing a workout at his home city for the team he has dreamed about since he was a kid. After running a 4.43 (hand time) on field turf he was able to move up his value a bit as a wide receiver by running again o

I’d probably look a bit more at specificity. Presuming that the OL clean is to improve explosiveness from a standing (or block) start, might I suggest a split stance clean. I have a few stats somewhere to justify this exercise should anyone need it. This exercise variation might be a little difficult with heavier loads but luckily in this case, loads are limited. I could suggest more variations but if the person in question is lifting 225 then safety becomes a factor with the undisclosed variations (which also don’t come with stats).

Also in light of Vern’s recent blog, the aspect of injury prevention/reduction should be a fundamental inclusion in all our thinking.

If you cant perform ol’s, no big deal because you still have sprints the most specfic task you can perform and mb throws/jumps..

If the athlete only have access to bad bars then going from the hang position will still be a problem.

I almost always suggest jump squats with a moderate load, ball throws, or some type of multi-jump.

          Jeremy-
When you say split cleans are you referring to the receiving position?

Would you even do jump squats in GPP?

I have in some rare situations. I’d probably do heavy clean pulls in that case. I was actually mixing the example up with another one (one of the athletes mentioned) who couldn’t do cleans because he didn’t have access to a good bar because it was Easter.

Let me clarify that. Split stance start clean. Or split squat clean. One leg in front of the other like a standing sprint start.
Forgive me for now but I can’t find the study that showed better correlations in predicting sprint starting speed from a split stance jump squat as opposed to a normal stance jump squat. If anyone needs that clarification I will find the study eventually.

In my opinion an OL clean (or hang clean) from a starting position of a split stance is more specific to a standing sprint start that is more applicable to team sports.

However, in the case of the person starring in the original blog, perhaps the load is not high enough for the clean and may be more appropriate in a snatch lift or very high pull.

You can totally do hangs with a bad bar as long as the load is lighter. I’ve done it many times. Until this year i’d never used a bar that spins and still did 290 with it. My problem isn’t usually that, as much as it is having a bar thats too thick or with no chalk. That’s when i can clean heavy…

At any rate, jumps are great and Pete Stanley’s guys do them from start to finish of the season. Nothing wrong with it.
