Curious from others – coaches and athletes (HS, College and beyond):
How much appetite would people have for a well organized decathlon in the late summer?
Past June, there are really no good competitions for anyone who is sub 8000. I guess Junior Olympics for HS kids, but for college and beyond… Nothing.
I’m thinking of trying to organize a late summer (IE – August) decathlon in Chicago. Could be a great pre-season tune-up for colleges, and a chance for post collegiates who aren’t doing USA vs. Germany.
I could probably pull in a couple top Dec guys to at least do a couple events. (IE – Olympians and past Olympians).
I’d want to put together a good sized field, with flights based on score (IE – 5-6,000 group; 6-6800 group, and 6800+). Would gun for a field of 30+, run it super Decathlon friendly (IE- on a fast track with tail winds, adjacent lane assignments, seed for each event, etc).
Would also have some fun and allow athletes (only post collegiates) to put money into a pool, and do some minor prize money.
Would also allow up to 10 or 12 guys to bunk for free at my place in downtown Chicago for the weekend.
PS – All this is borne out of a belief that we could actually have some fun with a Decathlon. Needs money, comparable competition levels, and a big field. Could actually be a pretty cool annual event, could grow to have different versions: IE – real Dec for guys trying to post a big mark for following year; 1 hour dec; 1 day Dec; team decathlon (Pick best guy per event); drunk dec (drink a beer between each event :), and so on.
Other disciplines do this (PV comes to mind), with some success. Decathlon is one of those events that people really get in their blood and can’t get out, so I bet if we had the right locale, we could draw a big group.
Could also take all the money and give it to a Charity.
