i was watching the olympic trials yesterday and watched maurice greene win both his heats (semis and finals). i also found out he has a tattoo that says goat, which is supposed to mean 'greatest of all time.' the commentator said that he didnt really deserve to call himself that because he had two gold medals while other sprinters had much more. he listed jesse owens, carl lewis, and michael johnson as runners with more. i was thinkin about it and the way he put it didnt seem right to me. maurice greene had the former WR in the 100, 50 and 60 records and seems to be able to run sub 10 at will, something i dont think many other sprinters can match (if at all). so while mo might not be the greatest track athlete of all time, he seems to be the greatest 100 runner i have ever seen. and in that respect i think mo has it right. thoughts from anyone else?

Mo is the greatest 100m sprinter of all time. Most Sub-10 runs, some of the fastest times ever ran, 50 and 60m WR's, and as long as he's been around, he's still blazing his competition away. No competition on the 100m level for him.

However, MJ is still the greatest sprinter of all time 😀

Most of these commentators don't know that much about track. Two gold medals? What the hell? If we're talking about Olympic games he only has one, however if we're talking about WC's etc. he has many more than 2, so I don't know what they're talking about. I suppose they meant if he does win in Athens. Besides, he obviously meant the 100m, in which case he already probably is the best, whether he wins in Athens or not.

Speaking of commentators not knowing a thing, did anyone see the guy who was interviewing the runners after their races last night (Monday) on USA network? This guy was clueless! He consistently got peoples' names wrong, he established no semblence of rapport, he did not know what to ask certain runners. This guy was HORRIBLE! USA should fire him immediately before he causes any further damage.

Gentlemen, Greene is obviously elite of the elite…will go down as one of the greatest, MAYBE the greatest of all time when all is said and done…however, let's not forget about "King" Carl….my vote for greatest 100m man as of now:

          9 straight #1 U.S. ranking in the 100m – 1981-1989
          5 straight #1 World ranking in the 100m – 1981-1985
          27 sub-10 sec. 100m races….yes that's 27 folks

Yes, Mo is great…hell he's better than great…i'll be cheering him on in his quest for a gold in the 100, but let's see where he's at in 5 years….fellas we're talking the greatest of ALL TIME right?? Let's not jump the gun on this one…let him finish the career first.

Eric- are you positive on Greene's 'most sub-10s of all time' ??

Gov- COMPLETELY agree with you on that mockery of a broadcast by the incompetent USA network reporter.

Jumps – I also heard that Mo had more <10 performances than Carl did. But, Mo's pr is still faster than Carl and he's probably run more races faster than Carl's pr as well.

And yes, that dude interviewing was a freaking joke. I say we let actual track athletes and coaches start doing the commentary at meets since we seem to be the only ones who know how to do it right.

Carl Lewis has 15 legal sub 10's. Mo has 46, Ato has 28, and Frankie has 27.
