Mike:
I think we probably lose far more potentially better sprinters (this extends to all events really) because they were late bloomers who by the time they were 20 or 21 probably would have passed the 10.6s 100m kid who was running 10.8s as a freshmen in HS than we do to the NFL or other sports, I certainly don’t think we lose many sprinters to the NBA or other sports, but we maybe lose those who could be elite jumpers or vaulters to the NBA. If anything we lose more athletes (all events) to the NFL than any other sport, but that’s because we have football coaches who don’t think track is worthwhile and cuts into the spring practice routine. Just imagine how much better Oklahoma would be if more its athletes spent time doing track than practicing in the spring to get the constant single calls and formations right come fall.
The sport system in America is fueled by specialization and marketing now and this will continue to kill all sports as kids will drop out more, get injured more often, and get sick of a sport sooner destroying motivation. How can someone honestly tell Jeff Demps he’s a football player and not a track guy? He’s 5’6″ and 165 lbs and the NFL wants 225 lb running backs at 6’1 or 6’2″ so they can have more Cedrick Benson’s, Eddie George’s, Kijana Carter’s, and less Warrick Dunn’s and Marshall Faulk’s. Barry Sanders would have had trouble being a first rounder in today’s day and age, much less getting any playing time because he was only 5’8″ 190lbs coming out of Oklahoma St.
BTW, If Deion increased his body mass by 20% in his career in the NFL I’ll eat crow, he may have gained 5lbs in his career, but if the guys discussed get drafted higher than the 4th round I will be extremely surprised as I only think Spiller has an opportunity to be drafted higher the 6th round and rest are likely not to be drafted at all because of their current size and the mindset of coaches and GM’s in the NFL. If anyone drafts these players it will likely be the Falcons, Steelers, Colts, Chargers, or Patriots and whoever Shanahan coaches next whom all happen to be playoff teams with loaded rosters, because they aren’t copycat teams who draft unconditionally (Falcons being an exception with their new GM), but making those teams will be extremely tough at the skill positions.
