          “…Ugh…worst coverage ever”

          Now now,

If coverage was as important as you make it sound, you would have taken a job at the other U of M!!!

UMaine not U of Miami, that way you’d be a jav throw from the Canadian border and you’d get same time coverage from the Candaian network!!!

Once every 4 years there is an advantage in living in the Polar Regions…

Kinda funny how Carol is working for NBC when she looks more suited to work for the Canadian broadcast
(on camera, looks like she is doing the polar bear / store fat for hibernation thing)

Gatlin… Damn! I can’t believe it. He was the only one of the “Big Five” (3 Americans, Powell, and Obikwelu), that I thought couldn’t win it. He looked like he was giving it all he had in the heats, whereas others looked like they were jogging through. From 30 meters and on nobody is faster than Gatlin, all he needed was a start, and tonight he got it.

Obikwelu….. Very impressed with Obikwelu. Solid from start to finish, is absolutely massive, looks very intimidating as he lumbers down the track. Good to see him finally put it together when it counts.

Mo……About what I expected from Mo. I didn’t think he would win, but I though he would run solidly and factor, which is exactly what he did.

Crawford….Solid, but just not good enough on this night, I really think he cost himself by showing off in the heats (he ran the same time in the quarters as he did in the finals).

Powell…. Man, I’m depressed over Powell’s run, I was cheering for him. I really don’t know what happened, but he might have drained himself in the heats too. Even though he looked like he was cruising in the quarter, he had to reaccelerate midway through the race, which is almost as taxing on the nervous system as running full out.

I’m not that suprised…. in watching the rounds I didn’t think Gatlin would win… but if you look at the film and study the splits from the Trials final you can see that Mo was very fortunate to have held on….. he doesn’t have the same top end/speed endurance/relaxation abilities as he did in 1998-2001.

JJ, since Mo has not been running the duece much since the 2000 OT blow up with Michael Johnson’s (which is shame to me)…. could this tie into your theory of glycolosis that we were discussing earlier (Although John Smith does do breakdown type of training with the 100m group.)?

I’ve felt since watching him run sub-20 playing around in the prelims at NCAA’s back in 2001 at LSU that Gatlin’s “better race” weas the duece. It’d be nice to see him win if only to make the 200 a respected event again instead of the bastard child it is now… I mean who even thinks of Capel as a great sprinter even he is the 200m WC.

I can’t wait to see the race myself. I was totally shocked as I thought Crawford would win, but he didn’t even medal 🙁 Regardless, we took 2 out of 3 and can be happy with that, I guess. I also can’t wait to watch the deuce. Even better, I wanna see that 400m final for both men’s and women’s. I think some fast times are coming there.

What a great race. My observations:
*Mo got a nice start and accelerated about as well as I’ve seen him.
*On the flip side (and possibly related?) Mo definitely looked like he was falling apart in the last 5-10m.
*Sean Crawford is a technical mess and I’m sure his shenanagans in the rounds cost him a medal. His acceleration looks , his hips are low at top end speed, his feet get out in front of him. Also, I noticed in the final that he doesn’t run very symetrically. The problem seemed to originate in his hips. I don’t know if this was a product of accumulated fatigue and / or stress from the rounds or if its something he always does but I’ve failed to notice. Has anyone else noticed this? Perhaps it was the camera angle but I don’t think so.
*Asafa Powell never looked relaxed at all.
*Gatlin seemed to run a very technically sound race. I’d love to see his 10m splits from 60m on. He seemed to really have a burst at about 60 or 70m that separated him from the pack.

Really? His times don’t seem to reflect a dropoff. If this is the case what accounts for the fact that he is basically running as fast as he ever has….. better acceleration?

The 100m was close…..but I like an athlete to dominate…ok gaitlin leaned and got the gold but I like my champs to run through with a huge lead to show the world he or she is the best.

I understand where you’re coming from but this field as just TOO good for ANYONE to do that.

Anyway, as far as the actual race goes, I think the consensus is that no one thought Gatlin would win. I mean we all know he’s talented, and COULD do it. But no one actually thought he WOULD do it. Regardless, I am very proud of our 100m representatives. I’ll tell you what. . . . . the 4 x 100m WR is GONE!. . . . SEE YA!!!

I am now looking forward to the men’s 400 and the mens and women’s 200. Here’s my predictions. . .

          In the 400, Wariner wins GOING AWAY! . . . . . . .AND. . . . . AND. . . . he goes 43.xx

In the women’s 200, Allyson Felix brings home the gold, going 21.9x

Shaping up to be a pretty good Olympic games guys.

Crawford has always been a technical mess if you ask me. I’ve never seen him run with any sort or proper form other than relaxation in the past 2-3 years. I also noticed a while back, thought it seems a little corrected now, that Gatlin used to overstride a bit. But, since his hamstring injury it seems to have really been put in check (relation?). I thought Mo looked good, but his time is done. One thing Crawford has to do from now on is start slowing down in the rounds. Yeah you want to make a statement, but I don’t think that statement should be “Hey, I can run faster than you as long as it doesn’t count!”. Watch for Gatlin to double.

Well, I’m not sure if Mo’s lack of 200m races has affected him from a metabolic/training perspective, because as you said John tends to address that in his training. But, the lessons/skills that are learned while racing the 200-rhythm, relaxation, patience-may be lacking.

Also, I think we finally saw Maurice “blink”. If you look at the head-on angle replay of Mo, at about 55-60m he glances to his left. After that, the strain was evident on his face for the rest of the race. He finally came face-to-face with his inevitable 100m mortality. That being said, he still ran 9.87. Sick.

Too good? Where are the 9.7s like everyone thought? With the WR at 9.78 with faster tracks….add in the fact that in 1999 mo ran a 9.80…I am not asking for Ben Johnson speeds (calculated 9.72-.73)

Does anybody else think that Crawford sounds a little bit like Chris Rock? He has fun with things, thats what I like but he did go all out all too soon. I feel like I was the only one who predicted gold for Gatlin, he’s my favorite sprinter and I knew he’d come through, he’s my boy, and reminds me of me haha (lies low, attacks when you need to, puts the talkers in place)

Another person who hase horrific form-Lauryn Williams, everytime I see her run I get P’ed off. SHe would of won if she knew how to run instead of how she does run (like someone has a stick in her butt and pushes her down hte track) SHe leans forwars the whole raceand the final 10m it catches up with her and she trips. She also ran VERY tense if you look at her face in the finals and the heats before that she ran relaxed. But she’ll get hte technical aspect down, she’ll begreat no doubt bout that one.

          hi all,

can anyone post out the video for men’s 100m final?

Lauryn Williams is actually a fairly sound mechanical runner with the exception of the excess lean. Her turnover is great and she runs really relaxed. She has actually learned to stand more upright from before. I think the thing that caught her is running rounds, something she’s probably not used to.

Crawford is becoming a joke to me….all hype early, nothing when it counts.
