Tyson Gay Didn’t Make the Finals
and two more hours to go until the 2008 Olympic 100m Final
Was both disappointed and surprised that such a good athlete did not finish in the top 4 of the semi-final. It also didn’t seem to me that it was the hamstring injury’s fault.

It wasn’t the injury’s fault? Are you serious?
I would like to thank NBC for ruining the Olympics not only by showing all the track stuff on delay by posting that Gay didn’t make finals on their nbcolympics.com front page just after it happened. If they are going to restrict out track viewing on a delayed schedule at least don’t ruin it for everyone by reporting the results before you televise the event.

I saw it online. I was just speaking for the rest of America who may prefer not to “know before they show”.
I had a feeling he wasn’t going to make it. He didn’t look too hot in his QF. It makes for an interesting study in detraining affects and the role of the injury on performance. I was really weary when I heard that he wasn’t going to do anything for a while after trials. Even though he ran those blistering 100m times in Eugene he barely ran any of the 200m and his workload didn’t seem to be enough to warrant REALLY taking off that much time unless the injury was the primary cause…in which case I thought it would still be best to continue doing things and working around the injury.

They have to try to keep the American audience somehow. The average Joe cares nothing about times (or knows nothing) and just wants to see the US win.
I keep watching that damn race and I’m not even excited or shocked, because it feels fake.
I don’t know how else to describe it but it just feels fake.
It’s a weird feeling watching an athlete of that caliber fall like he did.

I feel sorry for Tyson Gay, the injury obviously impaired his preparation. I think he is a great representative for USA athletics , especially when the usual US sprinter comes accross as brash and in your face, ( not really a bad thing for our sport), Gay is the opposite.
Perhaps some of you referring to Bolts performance as false is just a shock reaction as it is hard for you not to have the usual USA dominance, Athletics is Jamaica’s No 2 sport just behind soccer in popularity so Im sure the support and drive that is behinds bolts performance is all about desire. Plus his physical make up is different to the usual, so why not have such an out standing performance unquestioned?
In the US track is probably no 6 on the sport popularity stakes, which expalins why your TV coverage is so crap. maybe this is as a result of Joe puplic always thinking its drugs
I am watching in Europe on the BBC digital TV service and can chose which Olympic sport I want to watch 24/7, so no Phelps for me or plonkers on horseback.

I doubt you’d say that if Gay won. The Jamaicans have been the most tested athletes since they arrived in Beijing, Powell was complaining during the week saying they’re were taking too much blood from them and they were receiving an unusual amount of attention. It was the cleanest 100m race ever as stated by Michael Johnson and how can you argue with a 6’5 Jamaican sprinter who covered the race in 41 strides compared to the other’s 45?

Exactly! He hasn’t come from nowhere, he won the World Juniors when he was 15 in a sub 20 run. He is the definition of sprinter. It could be that the small guys that were thought to have the best physique for sprinting aren’t suited for anything except being a jockey and all the tall guys that were told they were too tall are doing 400’s, 800’s or playing other sports. He has the perfect combination of leg speed and stride length and that’s the result of it.

Nah, I’m not a believer in ANYONE who runs 9.69 jogging & clowning to the finish line. I am an equal opportunity disbeliver:

As for the level of testing… when you give me the out of season testing records for UB, I’ll accept your point. They should be the most tested being most suspect both by previous PR’s and a history of “unavailable for testing” countrymen when the testers come to the Island. Perhaps you might be able to share an intimate knowledge of the Jamacian Federation’s stringent internal testing program?
I am not of the belief that were one to slide Coach Mills a written test with questions as advanced in the training/competition sciences as the 100 WR is advanced beyond what previously existed, that the result would not be equal in quality to the supposedly clean 9.69
Not “American Bull” just one American’s belief. In America we are both empowered to have personal beliefs (even when they differ with others) and we also enjoy the right to express them…
NBC’s coverage is horrible in regards to T&F;. I’ve learned more about swimming than I really ever cared to know. Is anyone out there getting some real video on the track events. I would love to see some rounds in the field events. It just feels like I’m missing so much.
you also have the “right to bear arms” in your country as well as the right to free speach so maybe try the pistol shooting in the olympics and just accept that some body other than the the USA can win the 100…tee hee
I agree. Hope he smashes the 200m record some day. Maybe the Americans should look into trying to win the shooting instead..
Donovan Bailey’s welcome to A.Bolt (on CBC) into the “group” of, I assume, Olympic champions, World Record holders and as the latest continuation of the elite sprinters to come out of Jamaica was interesting since, like CFKA mentions previously, I am not sure I would place him on such a high pedestal.
I am willing to make allowances for the exuberance of youth but at the same time clearly being the best should be enough and this was very near to show-boating/rubbing competitors’ noses in it.
I also always question taking such a risk. IF he had run all the way past the finish under full power it certainly appears as if he could have run 9.5 or high 9.4 and so could have a very long term legacy (D.B. Olympic Record had stood since 1996). I hope the potential he still has comes to fruition. Life has its way of raising its ugly head, ask Tyson Gay.

Cultural differences. This isn’t tea time with Queen Elizabeth. I think if you run what he ran you should be allowed to have a little, no A LOT, of fun. Ever watch the NFL or World Cup soccer? No showboating there?
We teach our prep athletes to have good sportsmanship but, it’s hard to do when the “Heroes” of our sport do stupid things like Bolt did. This is similar to when Crawford and Gatlin decided to hold a conversation during the last 15 meters of their race in Athens. If our elite athletes have trouble showing proper decorum why should we expect our school age athletes too?

a. saving more PR reductions for more paydays down the road ala Bubka’s minute nibbles at the PV WR back in the day?
b. Not blowing away the WR to perhaps avoid greater questioning of the purity of the performance?

A- yes though it is a bit difficult to repeatedly shave .01 off of your 100m record 🙂
B- i don’t know about this one. even if he is on drugs, he still destroyed all of the other drug athletes from the history of mankind.

Yea she’s hot. She’d be hotter without kids. I think she’s on something…fungus soup, turtle blood, who knows. I give little worth to participation in the magic new anti-doping protocols for some reason (just a hunch).
