I’m looking for a device that will make a tone on desired intervals. Right now I blow a whistle at each time interval, but then I’m watching the watch more than paying attention to my kids, making sure they’re where they should be in the run. Any ideas where I could find something like this?

Vern Gambetta also sells one on his site but it is quite expensive and I’m not sure if the range of the speaker would work.
I can definitely sympathize with you though. I did the same thing you’re doing while I was working with sprinters at USMA and it made it very difficult to watch the runs. Also, figuring out when they were on pace or not on pace (and yelling accordingly) stretched the limits of my multi-tasking abilities (watching runs, timing runs, calling pace, figuring out slow or fast).
I also looked in to making my own device. If you have a little bit of electrical know-how you could make one yourself from stuff you could pick up at Radio Shack for about $50. The only reason I didn’t do that was because it would be a little bulkier than I had wanted.

Hart is exactly where I got the idea from.
Looked up the Coach Beeper…holy shnikes. $780 is almost half my salary!
Mike, do you have a list of the things needed for the homemade Radio Shack device?

I’m familiar with the coach beeper format and I am sure I can provide exactly what you are asking for in form of a mp3, that can be downloaded onto an ipod or mp3 player.
email me the specifications…

Managers is a good idea, I’ll see what I can scare up. Seems like we never have anyone interested though. Usually we use kids who are imjured.

Haha, this is true. I could ask either sex then. We break up the duties by event and ability, so I coach boys and girls even though I’m the boys head coach.

If there is a big enough market for such things I could possible make some of these.

heres an idea…you get a boom box and you record different paces on a cd and play it….
A horn or home alarm, a count down timer with a switch (to turn the horn on and off), some standard wiring, a a case for housing. No soldering would be necessary.
