Have always seen myself as a 200/400 runner with PB’s of 22.9 and 51.6 but seemed to have had a mental block over 400. This year despite getting quicker over 100/200 I can’t run quick in a 400 race and perform much better in training. I ran a negative split 53.11 indoors and a 54.5 outdoors where I died.

I ran a 200 and 800 this weekend for my club. 23.5 into a headwind and I ran 2:05 going through in 68 and sprinting the last 100 to win rather than go for a time. People are telling me I may have potential.

My coach is a 400/800 guy but is one of the best in the business. Long term I think my inability to put weight on will hinder me in the sprints.

          Any thoughts?

with a 22.9 I think u have the potential to a sub 50, 400m. And a 53-54 400m time is strange considering your 200m time. For me and for most others the 800m is much more mental hard than 400m. 400m is 150m suffering. 800m is 300-400m suffering.

Seems like u can improve your specific 400m endurance?

So u think that your inability to gain weight will hinder u? I am sorry if I misunderstand. But how can that be a problem? Get stronger without getting heavier would be ideal. Work on rate of forcedevolopment. (plyos)

Despite having speed I can almost even pace a 400 as quick as I can run one flat out, thinking I might be suited to the 800. My electric bests are 23.47 and 50.9 both indoors, I just think I don’t have it mentally for the 400. I am able to run a 800 relaxed.

McCabe you should try it. I think 2:05 is a great time for a guy like you who comes from primarily a sprinting background, especially on your first go. I know a distance kid on my team who can go 2:02 and he’s absolutely no where near your 100/200/400 times, probably 14/26/54 at best. If you can develop the endurance and get used to the race I think you could do really well, I wouldn’t be surprised to see you go 1:5X pretty quickly.
