We use a water filter that softens the water in our house and I can't convince my parents to get a better (READ: also much more expensive) filter. I've been adding minerals to the water, should I also consider potassium supplementation to help the sodium:potassium ratio?

I don't think it's necessary. Unless you're referring to something other than what I'm thinking of, the sodium:potassium ratio of water is not too important because they would never meet a level where either could have a significant effect as electrolyte replacements for post workout situations or otherwise.

Potassium is important in muscle relaxation and having adequate amounts in the diet will help prevent muscle cramping. It also has been shown to reduce blood pressure which won't mean too much now but may help in about 40-50 years when you're heart will be thanking you.
