Powell just tied the WR in Athens!
Powell runs 9.77

-
they rounded it down to 9.77 – new WR
-
video is here:
-
Jogged the last 30 meters in trials in 9.99!
Man.. this kid is going 9.75 before the end of the season. -
crazy, i think hes got more in the tank though.
-
I think he’s capable of a 9.73 or thereabouts. I was doubting his “easing up” in the past few races but this one proved me wrong. Asafa definately deserves the record.
-
Incredible & amazing are right. This guy is awesome, thanks for the videos.

It's about time that the worlds best clocking belongs to the worlds best talent. –
It's not supprising to me, and to tell you the truth I'm not exactly overjoyed about it either.
I would like to see more of an under-dog sprinter hold this distiction such as Greene or Mongomery, guys who have/had less Natural tools than a Huge talent such as Asafa. It is about 15% more impressive when I saw tiny Tim break it standing only 5'8.5 ft tall.
It is about 25% more impressive when Maurice ran 9.79, crushing All competition available around him for 4 solid years, considering where he started out (how no-one offered a helping hand until age 23), and also the tools that he had at only 5'9.
Steve Prefontaine was an All Time Great and Yes, he was right when he said "There are a hundred guys with more talent in their little pinky fingure than me."
It's not about how fast you run, it's about how far you go with what you have.
This is the measuring stick of Impressive, by which Heros are made.Mad props to the guy and everything,
But you still need to show us something more Asafa.
If I had what you have I'd be running completely Off the charts,
If I'm lyin' I'm dyin'.

All i can say to your input here is: WORD! Exactly what I feel.
If I could I would give you a prize or something! 😀 -
Does anyone else notice this guy has NO lean whatsoever? He just runs through the line and, in cases like the Pre meet, lets his arrogance get the best of him and loses. If he at some point realizes that he can do better if he get's his act together, I have no problem saying that I could see 9.69 in the future. It's a bold statement, but this guy has a natural something that he doesn't know about yet.
-
Powell? Arrogant? Haha, yeah right. At the Pre meet he was seeing how a groin injury felt. he easily could have won that race. About 10m from the line he looked over at gatlin and at about 5m started to back off. He didn't care about winning. You don't see him lean because theres no reason for him to. At Ostrava he had no one close to him, in Athens he had no one close to him, at the Pre Classic he didn't care about winning. The man runs his own race, and he's probably the most modest man to ever hold a 100m WR.
Thats not to say he's oblivious to his talent either. He knows he has incredible talent, but he's quiet about it. He was asked how fast he thinks he can go, and his response was along the lines of "9 something. Ask me after the season is over". Quiet and Confident does not equal arrogant. -
I think his coach did a stupid move, he put more pressure on him by saying that he for sure beleives Powell break the 9.77 record later on in the year. He says this b/c they are training for the World Championships in like 6 weeks, so Powell hasn't peaked yet.
I just think that that is unnecessary pressure to put on a young sprinter like that, but maybe he'll react to it in a positive way.
-
i think powell knows for sure he can do it, so he probably doesnt feel any pressure. just with a faster reaction tim he gets 9.75 and im sure he can run the race faster.
