What is the correct amount of stretching before a meet, is the less is more principle better, or would a long stretching period be the right choice.  What should be the breakdown between static and dynamic?

I wouldn't really do any static stretching unless you go out for a warm up run in the morning before the meet and static stretch then. Lots of dynamic stretching/flexibility before your race. Make sure you have done starts and such.

what if your race is in the morning? then what do you do?  Can you take a warm up run with static stretches about 1hr to1hr 1/2 before you start your dynamic stretches for your race?

as long as you don't do static stretching within about 30 minutes of your race, you're alright.

I don't think there would be any problem with this as long as you weren't going overboard with super intense stretching. In fact this is what most top-level athletes do for their warmup (which typically lasts 90-120 minutes).

What i want to know is, is there a gap/time period between the static  stretches and dynamic stretches?  and if anyone knows how long?

[/quote]No. At least not the way I've seen most do it. Some follow static stretches immediately by dynamic stretches while others might throw a dynamic activity like hurdle mobility or sprint drills in between.

so that wouldn't have any effect on power output?  static stretching then immediately some kind of dynamic actvity?  or maybe it wont? since their warmup is so long  probably their muscles have time to regain what was lost with static stretching, i could be wrong.  what do ya think?

I think when looking at this, one needs to look at more than physiological effect. Some people enjoy static stretching for psychological reasons as well. In any case, it appears that if the stretches are followed by dynamic activities that the negative effects of static stretching are at the least greatly diminished.

I think this may be the case.
