I have never really supplemented protein in my diet however i plan to start! I know the rule of thumb is 1-1.5 grams per pound of body weight. I weigh 150 so 150-225 grams of protein should be sufficient.

My question is since I really do not watch what I eat and do not plan on figuring out how much protein I eat a day is it safe to say i am gettin around 100 grams and rely on protein bars and shakes for another say 100 grams? What do you all do? I find it hard to believe everyone totals up the amount of protein from foods they are consuming daily.

Also since we are on the topic lets talk about which protein bars/ powders everyone uses and why?
what are the best? lets base it on ingredients, taste and price.

I think most people who don't monitor their protein intake typically get quite a bit less than what they think they're getting. This is particularly true for women who I've seen consume as little as 20g / day when left to their own devices. If you want to keep it really simple, monitor your protein intakeyour intake averages out. That way you'll know where you generally are for protein and be able to better estimate your supplement needs.

As you mentioned though, there is a window of recommended protein intake so what I ussually do is keep a really general running list in my head of what I'm eating. If you know the protein content of basic everyday high-protein foods (like eggs, chicken breasts, can of tuna, etc.) then you can get a good guestimate because you'll know the major contributors of protein to your diet and the things like bread and milk that have marginal contributions to protein intake can be loosely estimated unless you're eating them in mass quantities. I've found this gives a good ballpark number and now that I've done it for so long I don't even really make the list anymore, I've just learned to know what and how much I need to eat.

How much protein can our body absorb in one sitting? I find it strange that some protein powders are up to 65 grams. I heard somewhere around 30 is the max amount that can be absorbed.

The notion that the human body has a limited capability for protein absorption has never been proven and there is in fact no research that I know of that would even indicate that it might be the case. It probably came from the same Dr. who sold everyone on believing that we all need 8 glasses of water a day to be healthy.

i know exactly what you are talking about. i started the zone diet by Dr. Barry Sears a few months back. since i am dedicatd to the diet i realized that i only consumed 100g of protein when i really required 165g. protein shacks/bars definitly help with getting the right amounts.
