For all those who wonder what a track guy might run in a football 40y…here's some food for thought from David Showers of the Northwest Arkansas Times:Running at Arkansas’ pro day earlier this month was a serious endeavor for all involved, save one. For former Fayetteville High and University of Arkansas sprinter extraordinaire Wallace Spearmon Jr., it was merely a lark. He ran the 40

I don't know but he was certainly a better accelerator than spearmon at equivalent points in their careers. If nothing else though the 4.28 gives us a good bench mark of what a world class sprinter might post under legit football testing conditions…FAT timing, turf, no spikes, etc.

his accle must be weak bc 4.28 is fast but other fb players have done that.

          0.3 seems like too much.

In any case, the article implies he ran about 0.1s faster earlier.

Well I've run a 4.4 handtime in spikes and in waffles and I'm willing to bet I couldn't break 4.8 in sneakers not to mention i'd probably get hurt. I have trouble doing my warmup buildups in trainers nevermind trying to sprint all out! lol

There are some very fast football players.  Xavier Carter use to play football.  Bennie Brezell(sp) is a football player.  Willie Gault was a big time track runner and ftball player.  With Spearmon's long strides, @ 40 yards is probably where he start to hit his max speed.  This guy in this vid(yamon figurs) ran a 4.30, he probably ran track before.

Spearmon probably doesn't hit top speed til about 50-60m (55-66 yards).

Xavier Carter is also a fairly weak starter. In fact, it's kind of amazing that he runs as fast as he does in the 100m because he almost always gets beat through 30m.

yeh, i memba watching that ncaa 100m final on tv last year, he seemed to be almost losing with 15m to go, then just scooted past everyone. I was sure he was out of it, he literally caught 3-4m in the last 20-25 on the leaders, i'm sure.
