Given that the quality of work is not necessarily the main goal of tempo workouts, Would it be better to do it before or after a weight training session (that emphasized upper body)?
Tempo before or after weights?

I normally do any running work before lifting work. The simple reason for is that no matter what, running is always the main focus of training with weight work being supplementary. also, tempo running and weight training train the system in different ways. Tempo running shouldn't make you so tired it has negative effects on lifting.

[/quote]I never said tempo wasn't important. In fact, I think that tempo has just as much importance, if not more, that weight training. The purpose of tempo running is for recovery. Proper recovery is essential to sprint training, since without it, you can't train effectively the next day.
Now I'm not saying that you can't get tempo effects by doing things in the weight room because you can, but if I had to choose between only tempo running or only upper body weight lifting, as was said in the original post, I'd run tempo every time.

my bad. I'm thinking from a track runner's standpoint. I didn't realize you were coming at it from a football player's mentality. And you're right, there are plenty of different ways to get the same thing done, I was just giving my opinion.
That makes sense, but being a part time athlete, I have to conform to big city traffic patterns, and it's easier for me to lift first. Additionally, I have two days in the week where I do tempo as the only workout of the day, and the upper body day in question is my only Max-Effort day of the week. I feel I need more upper body strength anyway, so I think I'll go with weights first in this case. Thanks for your input.
