maybe its just me, but i find the best way to get out of your stance and into the acceleration stage in the 40 yd dash is quite simple.

To initiate the start, basically all you have to do take the arm thats on the ground and rip back violently. This will forcefully propel your body forward and it will make you fly out your stance. literally. Once i started doing this it cut my 40 yd dash by .25 seconds from a 4.60 to a 4.35 (hand timed of course, but if you add the standard .08 seconds you get 4.43 which aint bad)

          Am I on to something?

          Or am I insane? :eureka:

Give it some time.  You posted that this morning.  Mike has other engagements beyond ET.com.  I'm certain he'll post as soon as possible.  Untill then, you must be patient.

the point of this thread was to see if the way i come out of my stance in the 40 yd dash is biomechanically correct. you see, instead of jumping out, i find it more effective to rip my grounded hand off the ground to give me the forward momentum needed for the acceleration phase and onward.

i just wanted to know if this is how a lot of you guys who run the 40 do it.

It seems this thread has falling flat on its face. Let me pose the question a different way.

Is the way you come out of your stance in the 40 yd dash similar to the way you come out the blocks in track?

The reason I ask is because I'm trying to improve my start which I feel will help me CONSISTENTLY run in the 4.4 to 4.5 range.

I guess what I'm really asking is what is the norm for coming out of your stance in the 40?

When they are doing acceleration development I have my sprinters use an almost identical crouch start (not using blocks) to my footballer's 3 point start. The laws that govern human movement are the same for both actions and the general objective is the same…maximize mechanics for efficient acceleration.

i understand u want to acc maximize mech but i just dont understand why so far behined the line.

IMO the benefit of having this foot position outweighs the fact that the front foot is a couple inches behind the line.

i understand what u r saying but i have tested 10-20yds times both ways and the feet close to the line seem to be the fastest.

My tests indicate otherwise. I've found 10 yard / meter times to be about the same with an insignificant edge to the close to the line position but anything beyond 20+ yards / meters gives the advantage to the more spaced starting position. Perhaps the difference is how we deal with body progressions in the first 20 yards / meters.
