Coaches I'm curious, how are the athletic trainers at your universities? I certainly don't want to knock a whole field, but the athletic training practices I typically see are quite unappealing. A typical scenario is to:
Have an athlete incur a soft tissue injury. Send them to see the trainers. Trainer tells the athlete you've strained X muscle, after performing various tests to pinpoint the exact muscle. Trainer gives athlete ice and prescribes ibuprofen. Says "See me 45 minutes before practice tomorrow." The following day the trainer tells athlete "Your X muscle is weak. That's why you injured it. We will strengthen it." Trainer puts athlete through 30 minutes of strengthening exercises designed to pinpoint X muscle. Trainer hooks athlete up to electrical stimulation in combo with heat for 15 minutes. Walks away. Athlete finishes treatment and practices. Pain continues indefinitely. Repeat.
Have my experiences with athletic trainers on college campuses been extraordinary, or is this fairly typical?
