Triple Jump Video Analysis/w sequenced pic

          Hi I am a 22 yr old triple Jumper from Canada. I have been training for triple for three years now and have recently cracked 15m + . I have a very good coach but I was just wondering if I could get the opinions of a few other people/coaches out there. So I am going to post some links to some videos of myself jumping. I have tried to keep the video size small so that the loading time is minimal for whoever looks at them.

          Here are some quick things I noticed:
          1. You tend to lean back coming into the takeoff. Consequently, your takeoff foot gets out in front of you which leads to a loss of horizontal velocity. This is especially evident in the first video (the link not the movie you get when you click on the pic).
          2. I'd tone down the arm and leg swings a little and be sure to block a little harder. Also, try to swing the leg with a little less knee flexion.
          3. The hop phase is much too high. This results in a loss of horizontal velocity. This may be tied in to or caused by my first point.

          I'm the person on the videos on the right using the first link. My name is Bruce McCannel and I am also 22, Sean is my roomate and we train together and compete for the same track team. I was wondering if anyone had any input on either of the videos i'm in? I think I jumped about 15.30m that day.

          Bruce-
          It's tough to see in those videos because they seem to be a little lower quality than the individual links that were posted of Sean but it looks like you put the takeoff foot in front of your body just like Sean does.

          Sean-

          One thing that sticks out to me (credit to you) is your posture throughout the hop and step phases….as Mike said, the backward lean at take-off is working against you as far as your horizontal velocities are concerned, but your ability to maintain this strong posture is a definite plus. :yes:

          Although a little difficult to examine through the clips (indoor), it seems that your landing prep phase may be hurried following your jump take-off. Following the jump, you might focus on keeping that solid posture in the air for just a bit longer and hold. This could be accomplished (mike made the comment) by blocking better at this point in your jump.

          I like the clips and pics very much though and you are a talented jumper…I'd like to see more if you have them to share.

          I noticed the same thing. Despite doing a lot of things that tend to really disrupt posture, you seem to maintain it better than would be expected.

          Thanks for all the input, it is much appreciated. It is no new news that we both lean back at takeoff, which I know I do as well in long jump. I have uploaded some video of us competing this past weekend. It was not our greatest performances but keep in mind this is the first meet of the indoor season.

          I have found a new codec for the videos. I feel it preserves the quality and minimizes the file size. The codec is called XVID and the codec to view the new movies is available for download here:

          This video is of myself jumping. I believe it was only in the mid 14m range, I was having dificulty with my last phase.

          This is another of myself. It was a 14.66m jump. I believe it could have been considerably further had i not lost composure in the jump faze and gone into my landing so quickly. Being quite off ballance may have contributed to landing early.?

          Although there are some minor things that you could work on(Braking at the takeoff board and you’re looking down going into the pit) You should also look at the positive things you are doing and continue to maintain them. Your posture throughout each phase is upright and you maintain a level head position. Although your hop phase height is a bit excessive, that is common in most jumpers. That phase seems to be about 17 or 18 feet. My advice get stronger, get stronger , get stronger.
