more a general question.  i like doing 2 sessios a day (morning weights/ afternoon track)
an just wanted to hear what you think about this.
sprinters for example,  dont matter what distance.

Yes, i do doubles everyday i train. morning and evening…until i get to comp period then its just once a day mostly…

make sure that you put the correct pairings (sp) together though…like dont do a tempo workout with a speed workout same day…

Next winter/spring I'll likely be training some middle distance runners with poor general fitness.  Would something like a morning E run(say 2-3 miles) of some kind be beneficial to establish a base?  My background is in sprinting and this will be my first time coaching distance runners, but track was such a joke at my school before I got there that anything is likely to bring improvement.  I'm not yet sure what their regular weekly set up will look like.

I'm doing two a days right now, and I'll continue doing them thruogh the summer and some two a days in the fall. I've done three a days in the past, and though they were beneficial for about three weeks, after that I burned out. I am doing a jump program in the morning and running and weights in the evening, then on the off days I am doing tempo in the morning and weights in the evening.

i two a day right now.  the only problem with it is you have to keep track of volume better.  for example, you can't go as hard lifting weights right after a speed session, but if you wait you can hit the weights harder.  you don't really want to go too much harder though, because you have less time for recovery.

I've always preferred doing 2 sessions over one if given the opportunity. I wouldn't however really ever do two TRACK sessions in a day. Typically, I'll do a track session (running) and a strength / general fitness session later.

          Thanks for the feedback guys.

Mike:  When you say you wouldn't do two track sessions in one day are you refering to sprintin or any type of running?  If working with distance runners or mid distance runners would you do one grass, one track days?

I would say two a days aren't bad as long as you like many have said watch your tempo and volume and making sure your getting enough rest.  The average student where I go to school is often lucky to get 6 or more hours asleep a night and often increase workouts with two a days would only lead to less sleep and more injuries.

I try to do 2 sessions whenever possible but very rarely if ever would I do 2 track sessions. I'd either split up the training in to a track session and a weights session or a track session and a technical session. Ocassionally, I'll have my multis and 500m / 400H do morning fartleks of 15 minutes.

Mike, for your technical session what would you normally do?

It would mostly be throws for multi event athletes or athletes and possibly some short approach jumping for jumpers.

Ok, thats what I thought, but I was wondering if you did anything special on the tech sessions with your flat sprinters.

Nope. For sprinters, I'd just do a weight session and a track session or a shakeout and a track session.

Benny, easy morning runs for 800m types is fine. Usually 3 times a week. but you can vary this the number of days is noyt written in stone.

One thing to remember is that if these kids are in really poor shape you still want to be conservative with afternoon track sessions.

Cross training might be another potential option for those set on two a days. I know alot of distance and mid distance folks that seem to get alot out of two or three pool or bike morning workouts.  I've personally found pool workouts to be good cross training to develop pain tolerance using under waters, 25 yards underwater with limited rest repeat.  Forces you to really focuse on your heart rate and body movements while under a great deal of pain sometimes.  This should of course be done with a partner for safety reason, I've passed out twice in the last three years doing underwaters.

How much rest do you all think is need between 2 a day sessions? I know in the past I have down aerobic workouts in the morning and cross country practice in the afternoon and found that to be decent rest. But I have done weight sessions then 2-3 hours later down a track workouts and felt recovered enough for those. The weight sessions did not contain a huge volume of lower body lifts on hard track days.

When 2 a days are conducted how different should the abilities being trained be? Like should the combos be speed/strength? Can the same ability be trained like strength in the morning and strength at night? or can the systems be as different as an aerobic/strength combo?

I suppose you could train any system you like, but most people use multiple day training sessions in an attempt to increase aerobic capacity.
