Here’s another example of a 100m super star running highly competitive 400m early in the season. He ran 45.57 which now gives him, Usain, and Asafa 45 second prs in the 400m.

On a different note, Spearmon ran 47.33. He used to be the much better 400m runner compared to Gay and I used to think he was capable of going under 44.

Spearmon had knee surgery earlier this year and is even further behind on his training than Gay.

do you think the 400m pr will necessarily lead to a 100m pr?

I don’t think so for the 100 but it definitely bodes well for his 200.

Yea by .1 mps but wind aided times still count for pr’s in my opinion.
His next best is 20.12 +1.6 from last year. I remeber watching him at indoor nationals in high school running 21.0 both him and Glen Mcfadden breaking the national record. That record later got destroyed by Xavier Carter 20.69.

I scoff at wind gauges. They are just a token item in track. Half the time they are backwards or in the wrong spot or incorrectly operated or blocked by coaches. I trust wind gauges about as much as I trust my astrologist.

Anyway, since everyyyyone supposedly does short to long, what’s with all these 45sec runs by the top 100m guys?

And what was the wind for Gay’s 400? Did they use my new hat wind gauge which is a modified spelunking helmet?

Especially at the D3 level. I’ve seen some of the stupidest crap involving wind gauges in the last few years

Especially for the 200m. It’s almost laughable. I suppose if set up appropriately they can accurately rule out a wind illegal mark but they can’t likely determine if a mark is wind legal.

Anyway, since everyyyyone supposedly does short to long, what’s with all these 45sec runs by the top 100m guys?

I can’t determine the level of sarcasm here so I’ll take the risk of assuming your being serious….I didn’t think Gay is on short-to-long. His program is modeled after John Smith’s now isn’t it? If so, that’s more like long to short.

And what was the wind for Gay’s 400? Did they use my new hat wind gauge which is a modified spelunking helmet?

Yes I believe they did. Unfortunately despite IAAF approval your patent was not approved and they are now readily available for all to wear.

Thanks for the info. What was his surgery on? The article says he’s training with Alleyne Francique. That’s 3 coaches in 3 years now I think.

Thanks for the link. I don’t think anything’s changed. I think he still bounces back and forth between Drummond and Lance (see ~50 second mark in the video).

I know, I cant remember if it was on this site or CF but someone said he was done training with Lance and was working with Jon full time. I thought it was true since I didnt hear him talking about Lance last summer etc.

I didn’t hear exactly what was wrong with his knee, but apparently it was injured for much of last year and he was running on it anyway.
I’d heard he moved to College Station to work with Pat Henry. I’d imagine Coach Henry is busy and can’t do every workout with him and Francique knows the system and is doing some of his sessions.

Since pretty much everyone does starts or some kind of acceleration work or drills from the beginning (even if it isn’t the focus), it is convenient (if you are trying to justify your system or tie it to some current elites) to call everything short-to-long and just write off all the intensive tempo as “split rep special endurance” or “so easy for a person who runs 19.6 and 9.7.”

Indeed. I still remember when I was at a USATF course years ago and they made it sound like everyone does short to long. I asked “since when” and they said something like “since the past 20 years”. This all despite the fact that their ‘recommended readings’ books had sprint programs of day1: 10×200 @80%…

I would like to know who the actually does short to long or maybe we just need to redefine the term. It doesn’t seem like that many people esepecially when the people supposedly doing it are out there running 400s in meets as openers.
