Gay aims to run 100 metres at U.S. nationals – managerBuzz up!

Reuters, Friday June 19 2009 By Gene Cherry
RALEIGH, North Carolina, June 19 (Reuters) – World 100 and 200 metres champion Tyson Gay will only compete over the shorter distance at next week’s U.S. championships and may run just one round, his manager said on Friday.
“He is committed to running one round in the 100,” Mark Wetmore told Reuters in a telephone interview. “It is unlikely he will run more than one round but it is possible.
“If he felt (after a good first round) he wanted to run more we have not closed out that possibility.”
The championships in Eugene, Oregon begin on Thursday with the first round of the 100 scheduled that day.
Like other world champions, Gay will receive an automatic berth to August’s IAAF world championships in his specialities if he competes in any event at the U.S. nationals, the American trials for the meeting.
He will defend his world 100 and 200 titles in Berlin, Wetmore said.
The 100 in Eugene will be the American record holder’s first of the season. He has raced twice at 400 and clocked a sizzling 19.58 seconds, the third fastest of all-time, in his only 200.
EUROPEAN PLANS
Gay’s plans for July and early August are a work in progress, Wetmore said.
“He’s really focused on running probably three races in Europe and he wants to run them at a very high level,” his manager said. “He just wants to be at his best for Berlin.”
Whether the schedule would include a race against Jamaican 100 and 200 world record holder and Olympic champion Usain Bolt ahead of the August 15-23 world championships “is too early to tell,” Wetmore said.
Bolt has said he would like to race Gay over 200 prior to the championships.
The two did not meet in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Gay was injured in the 200 at the U.S. trials and did not compete in the event at the Games.
He did not advance to the final of the 100 which Bolt won in a world record 9.69 seconds.
“He certainly is not avoiding Usain and Usain is not avoiding him,” Wetmore said. “It is just a question of whether their schedules match up.
“There are still discussions involving the two meeting in Europe before Berlin.”
Tyson to run only the heats of the 100

I think this is a smart decision. With his automatic bid to Berlin there’s no reason for him to risk injury….that’s a large part of the intent of the automatic bid for the previous world champions.

I don’t really like the decision…
I just think it’s a bit disrespectful of the other 100m runners. I think he should instead, find one of many races that are in Europe during that time frame and let the other American’s get on with it.
Or, he should run another event during the trials…

Im guessing he’s planning on keeping it simple as possible with running the 100 heats at the trials. But he needs a 100 race by now for sure considering berlin is 2 months away.
-
Yes i agree he needs a race…but why hasn’t he had one already? I think it’s rediculus how little some of the top American’s actually race…

ya quite wierd. 2 400s + 1 200?

All the other top 100m runner in the world have had at least 3 100m races i believe…def at least 2.

well who knows what hes doing… he did run 19.58 in his first 200 of the season, so i guess we’ll see whats happening.
-
maybe he doesn’t want to let the cat out the bag…in regards to his newly acquired 100m speed…maybe because it would raise questions
bolt raised some questions when he ran a 9.76 outa nowhere last year 😉
-
Yeah! lol
I just don’t think anyone can truly peak without sufficient number of race…i mean it usually take Asafa like 15-19 races to run his fastest times right ?
How is Gay going to run 9.7x to medal if he only runs 5 races before worlds? maybe he will…but i don’t know…

I feel the same way. If I were a top sprinting American, all I would do is run races. All of this buildup for a big race doesn’t do much convert the anticipation into nervousness and eventually… mistakes. But that’s just me. I only started running last year, so I have this opinion so that I can learn more from races.
-
I can understand why the big stars dont do the circuit meets and only choose a few big races…
BUT
It certianly doesnt help the sport grow etc when the big stars only run 5 races a year…

I think by not running he is helping out the other runners because it allows for another American to get to run at World Champs. Since he has the auto 4 Americans get to go instead of 3.
-
im saying he shouldnt run the heats and then just stop…
go to another meet in Europe and forget the trials…
-
Oh ok, I agree with that. Does he have to run at all in the USA Champs to move on to worlds?
-
I didn’t think so…
Kerron is running the 400m at the trials but isnt going to do the double at worlds even if he makes it…
not sure…
-
really…
wow well there it is then…
ok i see now…well, i don’t like that rule…

I felt horrible for Tyson. Nobody really watches the WC in Osaka and he won both the 200 and the 100. Then comes the trials and he is looking better than ever, and he hurts himself. Then he doesn’t even make a final in Beijing, and the media echoes Bolt’s name like nobody else, and Tyson is left in the shadows. He’s got a very odd running style, but is one of the fastest men in history.
I don’t feel bad for Asafa getting nothing after making the finals twice though because he is a choke artist and isn’t American. Usain Bolt is now the equivalent to Donovann Bailey. Gay is Johnson.

i dont agree with donovan = bolt / gay = johnson
lol… difference here is… bolt can beat gay in the 1 and 2 and bailey didnt stand a chance vs. johnson in the 2

I wouldn’t lose faith in Gay too soon. He is definitely capable of a sub 9.7, which may be enough to win. In the 200 I think Bolt can’t be beat, but if anybody can, it’s Gay.
if gay goes sub 9.7, the pure fact that bolts got some competition will give him a sub 9.6. If bolt can get into the same shape as beijing… even gay at his lifetime max. cant beat him… not hating against tyson cause him, asafa, bolt are my 3 fave sprinters, but just saying it as it is.
Plus… tyson has yet to run his 100 yet this season. -
Agreed Bolt will at some point in his life break 9.6 and will have the WR for centuries it looks like, but if he doesn’t get out of those blocks fast enough, it’s over. Michael Rodgers, Walter Dix, and Tyson Gay are all too quick. Usain Bolt can’t be perfect every day. I think Beijing scarred a lot of people. i don’t think you’re hating Gay, but underestimating him. I think he can run even in the low 9.6s or slightly faster. He is the reason Usain bolt got good. Asafa Powell is quite the sprinter, and is the black equivalent in looks to Fabio Cerutti, not to be homosexual, but he will get 4th or 5th again. He will be remembered as the sprinter that came close many, many times. He was apart of the Jamaican record 4×1 in Bejing and has a bronze in Osaka, so his world records were somewhat lived up to. Don’t forget about the Americans. Also, Wallace Spearmon cannot be forgotten. He’s my favorite in the 200, I love fast closers, a lot less boring.

Yes if bolt gets left hard, he’ll have a time time catching up. However dix isnt a fast starter.. neither is Tyson… And tyson needed all that wind to go 9.68… while bolt can do it in 0. Im jus saying… Bolt is clearly the fastest man, followed by tyson/powell.
-
Something is telling me Gay is faster right now. His 19.58 is the fastest ever at this time of year, and he was hurt last year. Now it is time for payback because Bolt got hurt earlier this year and it affected his training. Did you see how hard he was trying to get 9.77 with 2 m/s wind behind him? Gay cruised to a 19.58. In the 200 I think it will be a close call, down to the wire, but Bolt will win. I think in the 100 Gay will win. As for the long run, the WR will go to Bolt. This year feels like Tyson’s year! And the USA’s year too in the 4×100, 400(who else? maybe Belgium haha),4×400, 100, and 200.
This year also feels like Wariner’s year to me. I predict a lot of payback will be served. Wariner and Gay will rise again!, but it’s not like Wariner’s silver medal was really a fall, but still he’s that good that a silver is bad for him. I say:
100
1. Gay sub 9.7
2. Bolt low 9.7
3. Rodgers low 9.8
4. Martina high 9.8
5. Thompson low 9.9
6. Dix low 9.9
7. Asafa Powell high 9.9
8. anybody- maybe Pickering I hope (little diversity can’t hurt)400
1. Wariner 43.5
2. Merritt 43.9
3. Borlee 44.3
I’m rootinng on David Gillick too. (Ireland!)200
1. Bolt 19.5 low
2. Gay 19.5 high
3. Spearmon 19.7
Paul Hession to make finals (I’m Irish if you can’t tell) -

Paul Hession to make finals (I’m Irish if you can’t tell)While I do agree with things you said, I disagree with a couple points.
Bolt’s 9.77 … his reaction time was 0.206, very slow.. and a decent reaction is 0.160, so given a good start he’s at 9.72-9.73. Also he stumbled during his first few steps. To add to the point about him trying hard… we all know trying hard doesnt = faster running speeds… being relaxed = faster running.
Gay’s prep. has been much different, he came out running 400s, so clearly the endurance is much stronger than before.
I guess we’ll have a much better idea of the 100s after nationals, provided Gay runs 2 rounds and not one.
As for powell… I wouldnt disregard him that quickly, he has absolutely zero pressure on him right now. Problem is the prep. as he wont get in enough races + all the needed speed work to be able to run 4 rounds.

Davan and I may not get along always, but seeing as you are both new and a loudmouth I would advise you to lay off. He’s been a member of this and multiple other track communities for years and while I don’t agree with him on a few things he certainly has shown himself to know more about track and training theory than you have so far.
You are crazy (anyone, for that metter) for predicting times for the WC having 7 people under 10, and putting any sort of prediction on Gay and Bolt. One was injured last year so we don’t have an accurate gauge on his speed and fitness and Bolt has proven that predictions mean nothing when he steps on the track.

Bolt – 9.6 mid
Gay – 9.6 mid
Powell – 9.8 mid
Rodgers – 9.90
Dix – 9.9mid
Martina – 10.00For Wild Card Finalists – I like Chambers and Padgett
Times are tough to predict, because so much depends on conditions. I agree with Jake though, that Gay could go really fast this year. I see him giving bolt a real run for it.
-
So the fact that Chambers clearly peaks really well and ummm, how about the 6.42 he ran indoors…
Why does no one seem to rate him in the top 3?

Good point I forgot about him. He may be in the 9.8s. He needs to get a good start otherwise he has no chance though.

The funny thing about Chaimbers is that although he got caught cheating, he’s one of the only sprinters along with Pickering that I trust right now. Chaimbers came clean on everything and admitted everything, so he is either a really, really good liar or he is one of the cleanest people in track right now, lol. But seeing him next to Bolt and Gay on a podium would make a lot of people doubtful of the sport still.
-
UK testing is very tough and im sure they are both clean…
Although if red bull became illegal i doubt Pickering could run 10.50! lol, just kidding…i’d give him 10.30 😉
6.42 is amazing amazing amazing…

Yeah I heard he takes creatine too. Not like other people don’t do red bull and creatine, but does that make a difference? Much of one anyways. I would have thought maybe a couple hundedths of a seoncd at best, because i would imagine your heard rate before a pro track meet would be incredibly fast anyways. Afrenaline has always been enough for me to run my best.

My finalists….
Bolt
Gay
Powell
Dix
Chambers
Padgett
Thompson
RodgersMedalists…
Bolt
Gay
PowellThe key is Chambers and Padgett. It’ll start with them, and they’ll force everyone who’ll finish ahead of them to run faster (Bolt, Gay, Dix, Powell). Thompson may run 9.90/9.89 and seriously get like 7th. It has all the makings (barring injury) of being one of the greatest 100m fields ever.
The 200m and 400m have less drama. In the 200m it’s Bolt, Gay, and everyone else. In the 400m, Wariner will most certainly open back up that can of whoop ass on Merritt and show why leaving Mr. Hart was a mistake in the first place.
Oh and by the way, one thing that no one is really talking about…
That 4 x 100m WR will get re-broken by the Americans. Personally, I thought they were gonna do it at the Olympics, that is until Gay pulled up lame.
-
What I would really want to see is… all 8 finalists under 10 seconds (good running conditions + tailwind) and the 3 medallists being sub 9.7, with bolt sub 9.6. Sounds a bit too perfect… but does seem very much possible if the conditions/wind are favourable.
-
Merrit is better than he was last year at this time…what are you talking about?
