im not sure how many of you have heard of victor lopez hes the track coach at rice university, i  have some friends who are following his running format which includes doing weight exercises follow by multi jumps follow by short sprints of absolute speed no more then 60m distance/600m volume.  now this is the intresting stuff:  "when we do weight training most of the time the contraction used is concentric so the muscle is rarely extended.  therefore if one of the objectives in the training of sprinters is to improve the strecth and shortening cycle, it is important that after strength work with weights where the muscle is only shortening that it be stimulated so that it works eccentrically. it is important in obtaining a better strecth and shortening cycle. now since we have recruit a greater number of muscle fibers doing concentric work and then to complement we recruit the same fibers to do eccentric work at a high  frequency then we just have to use this energy in the specific drill which is full speed sprinting.

          KEY POINTS:
1-THERE ARE THOSE WHO CLAIM THAT AFTER STRENGTH TRAINING THE ATHLETES WILL HAVE VERY TIRED MUSCLES AND WILL INJURE THEMSELVES IF THEY DO REPS OF ABSOLUTE SPEED. FALSE.

2-THERE ARE OTHERS WHO PREDICATE THAT IN ORDER TO DO ABSLOUTE SPEED THE ATHLETES SHOULD BE TOTALLY RESTED. FALSE.

NO INJURIES BECAUSE THE MUSCLE WILL BE TOTALLY FLEXIBLE AND STRONG FROM THE GREAT AMOUNT OF  CONCENTRIC  AND ECCENTRIC WORK THAT IT HAS DONE.

          SORRY ABOUT THE CAPS.

i have talk to my friends and they seem to like the system…  what do u guys think??

          at the track:
5×6 hurdles jumps spaced 1-1.5 meter apart
5×4 long jumps 5th rep into pit
          15-20x20m focus on turnover.

          day 2:
          circuits/tempos
4 diff exercises with high knee actions

          day 3: repeat day 1

          day 4: repeat day 2:

          this is the beginning gpp.

Coach Lopez actually just retired. He had a long career and produced quite a few very good sprinters. His ideas are heavily influenced by the workouts of some Eastern-bloc  coaches.

Do you have any literature/writing on him you can direct me to? A friend who is very interested in Eastern-bloc methods would like this a lot.

          Thanks.

Sprints, Hurdles, Relays Track and Field News Press.  He has an article in there about his training methods.

If I'm not mistaken, Mike, Todd, Ron, Dave and others had a conversation about this a LONG time ago.  Check the archives…
