I love the cynacism.  Nothing upsets me like an athlete or worse yet, a sedentary person, trying to tell me that squatting to a full range of motion is bad for your knees.  I've had people tell me that overhead squats loaded with a broomstick and performed a full range of motion is awful for you knees.  Mullarkey!  Those who ultimately work to achieve that kind of mobility (using full ranges and light self-myofascial release), in my experience, get rid of a lot or all joint dysfunction.  This includes many older individuals.  While I do not advocate pressing the range of motion when a person is not ready for the move, I do believe that much soft-tissue and joint dysfunction could be alleviated if only a greater degree of mobility is achieved.

Thanks for the warning  :bigsmile:  I think stuff like squats and running can bother your knees because many people have putrid form.

While I do agree to a point, they are by no means harmful.  (Deep) Squatting is an essential human movement.  Kids achieve the full squat position all the time in play, and I've also seen and heard anecdotes of tribes in Africa who actually sit in a deep squat position instead of sitting on the ground.  I would aruge, as well, that their knees are exceptionally healthy and pain free.

As I think you'd probably agree, I think it's the 'putrid form' and not necessarily the 'knees over the toes' issue that is causing the problems. If for example an athlete is way up on their toes with the knees 4-6" in front of the knees AND under a very heavy load I suspect this could be quite damaging to the knees. If the heel stays on the ground though I don't think it would be a problem (assuming the person doesn't have any pre-existing knee pathologies).

best thing is when the same person that tells you to stop squatting deep (while your in midst of a set,  ahrg)  walks right off to perform heavy single leg extensions.

I agree of course.  I just keep thinking of this dude in my gym who squats and always has knee problems.  He has the mobility of my great grandmother though.
