what should i do w/knee pain?

I am new to this board but am really enjoying it so far.
I am a 32 and want to be in the next olympics for the 100 and 200m..Yes,this is a very high goal but all things are possible.
Mon-sat i workout on weights and i usually sprint the 50m
4x and then i used to jog 2miles a day until my knee started bugging me..It is my left knee..I think it is ITBS but i am not sure since i have not been diagnosed by a doc.Today i was laying on my stomach and tryed slowly moving my left leg up from off the bed to a 90degree angle and there was some pretty major pain there.
I have had this for a couple weeks maybe more.I usually don’t feel it walking only if i jog to long or slow..When i sprint i don’t feel the pain or walking doesn’t bug it….As far as what i have done to help it,i have cut way back on jogging to only a fast mile and i stopped all my 50lb leg curls…So this is my knee story sort of and since i have this huge goal of the olympics i can’t afford this knee problem..
What do sprinters do? especially those who are planning on racing? should i totally stop everything or keep going since it doesn’t really hurt during sprints?

ANy help would be so nice

If it is an IT band issue get a foam roller and try some self-myofascial release. I’ve found this to be quite helpful. Also as a sprinter, I’d suggest cutting out all the jogging. It doesn’t do anything to help sprint performance it may be aggravating your knee. Try replacing the warmup mile with a more dynamic warmup. Take out the other jogging all together. Finally, be sure to be diligent about strengthening exercises, expecially those for the hamstring and glute. The knee is often times the site of symptoms of weak or inhibitted glutes or hamstrings.

Thank-you so much for the advice on my knee.
I do agree with you on the glute issue, that has been an
area that i am really working on.
Did you have ITBS before? And if so how long did it take you to heal?
One thing i didn’t mention is that i have fibromyalgia,so my muscles are very tight allll the time especially in my back. But
regardless of that i still intend on aiming for the next Olympics…I have a million other questions about running and i will gradually post them and hopefully continue to get better at my running.I am sooooooo happy to have found
the elite track website it is awesome…

          Thanks again

Thanks for the encouragement..although i can REALLY see you being in the 2008 olympics with your time…Your are awsome…I on the other hand am very slow compared to i think every athlete on this website….But that will not detour me at all…
Basically i have started from scratch..I am a mom of 6kids and married of 14years…4of the kids i had physically..Had my last one three years ago..So i am done having kids and now can persue my dream..
Running has always been a passion of myne..In fact it helped me take off the fat after every kid i had…haha..
Basically everyone i tell about me persueing the olympics laugh at me because of my age…But age isn’t an issue to me..I feel young, look pretty young and i really don’t care what everyone thinks anyways..
My husband is trying to coach me right now..Really i have been sprinting now only for four months..In this time i have had to get my body back on track, which i have done pretty well..My time has improved from my first attempt to sprint out of shape..We basically don’t know what we are doing so that is why i am here on elite web…we have a track across the road that i use and i have a weight machine too…
What is a good time for the 50m? i basically run it in 7seconds..so far..i have come a long long ways in 4months.
ok good luck sorry to have wrote a book..hope to see you there too….;)

If treated appropriately, ITBS should ussually be gone in a copule of weeks.

My knee seems a little better but i can still fill some pain..
Totally stopped all jogging and haven’t been sprinting hardly.
To keep myself in shape i have been continuing on with my 6day a week weightlifting ect…and also been doing tae bo..
Does anyone know if tae bo would be good for crosstraining or recovery? I’m thinking it seems like i use my hips a lot in tae bo for balancing and that i think is where i need to work on….Does anyone use tae bo for preparing your body for sprinting?? There is lots of balancing and cicking and just over all powerfull movements..
