What Sprint Phase to Start After Winter Track To Beggining Of Spring Track?

I am a high school coach, and have several athletes (55 meters up to the 400) competing during the championship part of the winter season. We have 2 more meet left, and the last one is on Feb. 27th. I am wondering what to do with these athletes after the last meet of winter, because Spring Track begins March 7th. My Plan was to give them 4 days off, and then Start a 2 week GPP Phase of Intensive Tempo at 80 to 85%, along with accell, and then after 2 weeks, start a 2 weeks SPP phase with split runs at 90% along with accel/Max V. Am I giving them to much time off, and is the Intensive Tempo ok to start at the beggining of Spring?? Any Thoughts??

I think your plan sounds fine. I would set it up similarly. I’d limit the intensive tempo volume for the short sprinters though.

          Mike,

Do you reccomend the volumes and rest periods as they are listed in the Pfaff section?

For example 6×200 at 2min rest adding a minute per month eventually peaking at maybe 2-3 x 150 – 250 and with 20min rest. Problem I see with this is that if you work backwards from the peaking date you do not have enough months to get from 2 min to 20 min rest. Eventually you would have to draw the line for intensive tempo and extend the rest a good deal to get special end. right?

How long would you use intensive tempo for short sprinters and when would you extend the rest to develop spec end?

          Thanks

Yep. Those guidelines are for post-collegiates who can train full time 10 months of the year and pick and choose their competitions.

I’d probably use it anywhere between 4 and 12 weeks, gradually extending the rest after each 4 week training block.
